The Same Candle Every Evening

She strikes the match at half past six the way she has struck it at half past six for a long time now, and the house is quiet, and she could not tell you why she still does this.

A front room with two chairs in it and one of them not used. The lamp on the low setting because the high setting makes the room look like a place where something is meant to be happening. Outside, the sound of a street doing its ordinary evening.

The candle is a stub. She does not buy tall ones anymore because a tall one implies a plan.

She lights it. She shakes the match out and puts it in the saucer that has been the match saucer for years, and she sits down in the chair she sits in, and the candle does what candles do, which is very little, extremely slowly.

She started this in a particular week, for a particular reason, and the reason is over.

That is the thing. It is not that the reason is unresolved. It resolved, one way, eleven months ago, and the resolving was not good and there is nothing further to be done about any of it, and everybody who needed to know knows, and the cards have long since come down.

And she is still lighting a candle at half past six.

If somebody asked her, and one person did, she said something about liking the light in the evenings, which was not a lie exactly and was not the answer. The answer, which she has never given to anybody, is that she does not know, and that she is slightly afraid that continuing to do a thing whose reason has gone means something is wrong with her.

The candle burns. She reads for a bit. She puts it out at eight.

That is you, and your candle might be a route you still drive, a name still in a phone, a Sunday you still keep, an arrangement whose purpose finished and which you have not stopped.

Two plain things before anything else. If somebody in your life is frightening you or hurting you, nothing here is telling you to sit there and take it; tell one person today who can act. And whatever this is, it is not a person. Scripture is direct that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality, because it means you can stop losing to somebody you also love.

And I am not going to rally you. There is nothing to rally toward in this room and you would know if there were. I am also not going to tell you it is nearly over, because I do not know what "it" is anymore and neither, if she is honest, does she.

Paul writes four pairs and every one of them is a comma

There is a passage where Paul lists what is happening to him, and the whole structure of it is one small piece of punctuation used four times.

Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.2 Corinthians 4:9

Look at the shape rather than the content. Each pair grants something completely and then does not let it be the whole sentence.

Cast down. He does not qualify it. He does not add a clause about how it was not really that bad. Cast down is the actual state and he writes it down.

But not destroyed.

And notice how modest the second half of each pair is. He does not say cast down but triumphant. He does not say cast down but rejoicing. The second half of every pair is the smallest possible claim: not forsaken, not destroyed. Still here. Not finished.

That is not a rousing verse and it was never meant to be one. It is a man in serious trouble writing down the least he can honestly say, and it turns out that the least he can honestly say is enough to build a life on.

You are still here, and still here is the actual claim Scripture is making. That is not a lift for a woman in a chair at half past six: 2 Corinthians 4:9 grants the being cast down in full and puts the smallest possible clause on the other side of the comma, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a small true thing hold in a body that cannot explain its own evenings rather than the meaning anybody can assemble in an empty room.

Doing a thing whose reason has gone is not a symptom

Here is the fear underneath, and it should be answered plainly rather than stepped around.

She is afraid that lighting a candle for a reason that no longer exists means something is wrong with her. That it is a stuck behavior. That a well person would have stopped.

Nothing on this page is going to diagnose her and nothing here is a technique. But that particular fear can be answered on its own terms, and the answer is: a great deal of what human beings do continues past its stated reason, and almost none of it is a malfunction.

People keep a habit because the habit is now doing a second job that nobody named. A candle lit in a hard week became a way of marking that an evening had begun. It became a small ceremony in a house where nothing else marks anything anymore. It became, and this is the part she has never said, a way of being somebody who does something at half past six.

None of that is broken. That is a person keeping the shape of a day, which is one of the oldest and most reasonable things anybody does.

You have not been doing something senseless, and the reason moved rather than disappeared. The written word grants the being cast down and claims only the not being destroyed, and the Spirit of God has been in that room at half past six every evening, never the explanation anybody can produce for their own habits.

And nobody is asking you for one more push. There is no push. The instruction attached to the whole armor is stand, four times in six verses and no fifth verb, and a woman striking a match in an empty room is that verb sitting down with a book.

You are standing, and standing was always the assignment. Scripture calls a person who is still there at the end of it standing, and His Spirit is what has had a woman in that chair since the week it started.
