She stops in the middle of a sentence, in a parked car with the window half down, because she has just heard herself.
A side road near a school, twenty minutes early because she is always twenty minutes early, engine off, keys still in her hand. Somebody two cars up is eating something out of a bag. A tree is doing that thing trees do in a light wind where the whole thing goes silver for a second and then back.
She prays out loud in the car. She has for years. It is the only place in her life with a door on it.
And she is midway through a sentence about a person, and she has said this sentence, or something extremely close to it, most days since last spring, and today for reasons she could not give you she hears the shape of it from outside herself.
She is not asking God to help her with this person.
She is asking Him to deal with them.
Not violently. Nothing she would be ashamed to have written down, exactly. But every single word of it is aimed. It is a year of the most sincere praying she has ever done in her life, and the whole thing has been a case for the prosecution with an amen on the end.
She sits there. The tree goes silver again.
And the thing that arrives is not guilt exactly, though there is some. It is something closer to grief, because she can suddenly see how much of the last year she has spent on this and how little of it has gone anywhere, and because underneath the aiming is a woman who was hurt and has had nowhere to put it.
That is you, and it might not be a car. It might be the shower, or the drive home, or the ten minutes before sleep where you have a conversation with somebody who is not there.
Before anything else, and this comes first. If the person in your version of this frightens you, hurts you, or is doing something to you now, nothing on this page is telling you to stay near them, make contact, or be nice about it. Standing has never once meant staying somewhere unsafe. Tell one person today who can act: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will come and sit down. Do that first, and none of what follows asks you to be in the same room as anybody. And this is the whole spine of this site: whatever you are actually up against, it is not that person. Scripture says the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality, because it means the aiming can stop without anything being conceded.
And second, plainly: nothing here is going to tell you that what happened was fine, is not going to hand you a forgiveness deadline, is not going to require you to speak to anybody, and is not going to promise you that they change. It is going to take one person out of a position they were never supposed to be standing in.
Jesus names the category and then dissolves it
There is a sentence that everybody has heard and almost nobody has been given the mechanics of, and the mechanics are the mercy.
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.Matthew 5:44
Notice first that He does not pretend. He says enemies. He says curse, hate, despitefully use, persecute. Four different words for real harm, and not one softening. Whatever happened to you, He is not the one minimizing it, and if anybody has minimized it to you, that was them and not Him.
And then look at what He actually asks for, because it is not what most of us were told.
He does not ask for a feeling. There is no instruction to stop minding. He does not ask for contact, for a conversation, for a meeting, for an explanation, for you to be in a room with anybody. Every single verb in that sentence is something you do facing God, in your own car, with the window half down.
Bless. Pray for. That is it.
And what that does, mechanically, is take the person out of the crosshairs and leave them standing in front of God as a person, which is where they were all along and where you are also standing.
You are not required to hold this person as your opponent, and you never were, whatever the last year of praying sounded like. That is not a rebuke to a woman in a parked car: Matthew 5:44 names the harm honestly and then asks only for what is done facing God, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a relocated thing stay relocated in somebody who has been aiming for a year rather than the amount of graciousness anybody can manufacture at twenty minutes early.
The praying was not wasted and you are not in trouble
Here is what I am not going to do, and it matters that it is said out loud: I am not going to tell you that your year of prayers was wrong, or wasted, or that God was disappointed by any of it.
You brought Him the truth. Every single day. For a year. The content was aimed, and He was not shocked, and He did not withdraw, and there is a whole book in the middle of Scripture full of people saying far more pointed things than anything said in that car, carried there by His Spirit and kept in the canon on purpose.
What has happened this afternoon is not a telling off. It is a widening. The aiming was a year of grief with nowhere to go, and the moment you can hear it, God is already handing you somewhere else to put it, and it is not a technique and there is nothing here you could get wrong.
You have been heard every day of that year, and none of it disqualified you from anything. The written word gives an entire book to unsoftened prayer, and the Spirit of God has been the one carrying what you were never built to carry, never your ability to phrase it acceptably.
And the mechanics matter here, so let us be exact. Authority in Scripture is exercised over fear, over dread, over accusation, over the lie, over the powers of darkness. It is never aimed at another human being's will. Bless the person; command the mountain. That distinction is not a nicety, it is the difference between prayer and something else entirely, and it is also, as it happens, the thing that will get your evenings back.
You are free to stop prosecuting, and the case does not vanish when you stop, because it was never yours to hold. Scripture puts the repaying on God and the blessing in your mouth, and His Spirit is what makes that a fact in a body rather than a thing a woman agrees with and then goes back to aiming.
So nothing is being required of you in this parking space. No contact. No conversation. No forgiveness by Friday. No pretending.
You are free to put the case down, and it is already His, and it has been His since long before last spring. That is what stands written in Matthew 5:44, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one woman with keys still in her hand rather than true as a general position about enemies.
That set of crosshairs has no right to stay in this car. The word never aims a believer's authority at a human being's will, and the Spirit of God has not been waiting for you to feel gracious before He carries what you have been carrying.
One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If this year has taken you as far as thinking everything would be simpler if you were not here, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit in a car with you and not need the whole story. Do that first, this afternoon, before anything else on this page.
Declare this over yourself
Say these with the engine still off. Nothing needs working up: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than earned, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that has been aiming for a year, never the graciousness anybody can manufacture. And what He does about all of it, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.
- Year of praying in this car, you are not wasted and you were never held against me. Matthew 5:44 names the harm in four different words and never once asks me to pretend it did not happen.
- Crosshairs I have been praying through, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word aims authority at fear and dread and the powers of darkness and never once at a person, so you have no target left in this car.
- Lord, You have heard every unedited word of the last year and You did not withdraw once. Scripture says bless, and pray for, and both of those are things I do facing You, and Your Spirit has carried what I had nowhere else to put. I thank You, and I am saying their name out loud right now, once, and one true thing after it.
