Copied Into A New Notebook

This message is for needing something that does not change on the days when I cannot trust one thing I feel

The old one is coming apart in his hands and he is copying it, line by line, into a new one, and he is doing it in his grandfather's handwriting rather than his own.

Evening, a table, a lamp pulled over so the light falls on the left where he needs it. Two notebooks. The old one is held together at the spine with tape that has gone the color of weak tea, and there are pages in it that have come loose entirely and been put back in roughly the right place by somebody at some point, possibly him.

He is not copying the words. He is copying the way the words look.

Which is a strange thing to do and he knows it. He could type these. He could photograph the whole book in nine minutes. Instead he is sitting here at an unnecessary hour forming somebody else's letters, the long looping l, the way the old man crossed a t about a third of the way up.

And underneath the strangeness there is a reason he has not said to anybody, including his wife, who is upstairs and asleep.

He cannot trust anything he feels at the moment.

That is the plain fact of the last few months. His read of situations has been wrong. His sense of how a conversation went has been wrong. Whether he is doing well, whether people are cooling toward him, whether the thing that is worrying him is worth worrying about: on all of it his own instrument has been giving him readings he later finds out were nowhere near.

So he is copying something out. Something that was written before he was born, by a hand that has been in the ground for years, that says exactly what it said in 1974 and will say exactly the same thing tomorrow whatever he wakes up feeling.

He forms the long looping l. The old one goes on coming apart.

That is you, and your notebook might be a phone note, or a verse on a card, or a text somebody sent you that you have read four hundred times.

Two plain things before anything else. If somebody in your life is frightening you or hurting you, nothing here is telling you to stand there and absorb it; tell one person today who can act. And whatever this is, it is not a person. Not the ones who have gone quiet. Scripture is direct that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality, because it means you can stop losing to somebody you also love.

One line, and it is about location

There is a verse in the long psalm that says where something is, and where it is turns out to be the whole comfort.

For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.Psalm 119:89

Settled in heaven.

Not settled in the reader. Not settled in how the reader is doing this week. Somewhere else entirely, at a location that is not affected by anything happening at a table under a lamp at an unnecessary hour.

That matters because of what the man is actually afraid of. He is not afraid that the words are untrue. He is afraid that his ability to receive them has broken, and that a thing which depends on his reception is therefore as unreliable as he is.

And the verse answers exactly that, without ever once telling him his feelings are lies. It does not say his instrument is fine. It says the word is not stored in his instrument.

You are standing on something kept in a place your week cannot reach. That is not a soothing phrase for a man copying letters: Psalm 119:89 puts the settling somewhere other than the reader and states it as forever, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a settled thing hold under a person whose own readings have been wrong for months rather than the accuracy anybody can achieve at eleven at night.

Your feelings are information, and they are not the ground

Now the thing that has to be said carefully, because this is where a great deal of harm gets done with a Bible.

Nobody here is telling you that what you feel is a lie. That is not true, it is not kind, and it is not what the verse says. Feelings are information. Often they are accurate information. His sense that something is wrong may well be the most reliable thing in his life and simply be pointing at something other than what he thinks.

What has happened is not that his feelings have become false. It is that they have been asked to do a job they were never built for, which is to be the floor.

An instrument can be excellent and still not be a foundation. A thermometer is not a house. And a man who has been standing on his own read of things, and who has had a run of months where his read has been off, will conclude that the ground has gone, when in fact he was never standing on ground.

You are held by something that was true before today and does not move with the reading. The written word puts the settling in heaven and says forever, and His Spirit is the one making it hold under a real man at a real table, never the quality of anybody's inner weather.

There is no key here, and no technique. Nothing on this page is a method for making a verse work, because a verse is not a mechanism and anything you could perform correctly or incorrectly would put the whole weight back on the one performing it, and that weight has been on your shoulders for months.

The breakthrough

So nothing has to be felt at this table tonight.

You are held by a word that is settled somewhere else, right now, with your pen halfway through a line. That is what stands written in Psalm 119:89, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one man under one lamp rather than true as a general remark about eternity.

The conclusion that the ground has gone because your reading has been wrong has no right to stay in this room. The word is settled in heaven and never once located in the reader, and the Spirit of God does not withdraw a foundation while a person's instrument is out.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If the last few months have taken you as far as thinking that a person who cannot trust his own read of things is no use to anybody, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit at that table with you and not need the whole story. Do that first, tonight, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the pen still in your hand. There is nothing to work up to: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than achieved, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body whose own readings have been wrong for months, never the accuracy anybody can manage at eleven at night. And whatever He does about the months, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Instrument I cannot trust at the moment, you are information and you were never the floor. Psalm 119:89 says for ever, O Lord, Thy word is settled in heaven, and heaven is not a place my week can reach.
  2. Conclusion that the ground has gone, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word is settled somewhere other than in me, so a bad reading has never once moved it and you have no case to make here.
  3. Lord, You settled this before my grandfather learned to write and it says the same thing tomorrow. Scripture says Thy word is settled in heaven, and Your Spirit is why that holds under a man copying letters at an unnecessary hour. I thank You, and I am writing one verse out by hand right now and putting it where I will see it tonight.
