The Sentence I Cannot Believe About Myself

She says it out loud in a parking lot to test it, and it comes out flat, and she stands there with her keys in her hand hearing how flat it was.

Golden hour, the light coming in low across a parking lot that is emptying, three cars left and hers. Somebody is putting a keyboard case into a hatchback with the particular care of somebody who has done it four hundred times. The building behind her is still warm and still has ten people in it who are not going home.

She has just spent an hour saying true things to people, and they landed, and she knows they landed because she watched them land.

She said one of them to a woman in the second row who has been carrying something for a long time. She said it plainly and she meant it and she watched the woman's shoulders come down about an inch, and that is not nothing, that is what the whole thing is for.

And now she is at her car and she says the same sentence to herself, out loud, to see whether it will do the same thing.

It does not.

It comes out of her mouth and hangs there in the evening air being completely true and entirely inert. She hears it the way you hear your own voice on a recording, which is to say as somebody else's, and somebody else's voice saying that about her is not credible.

She gets in. She puts the keys in and does not turn them for a second.

That is you, and your parking lot might be a hallway after a shift, a kitchen after a phone call, the moment you close a door having just been very good at something you cannot receive.

Two plain things before anything else. If somebody in your life is frightening you or hurting you, nothing here is telling you to stand there and absorb it; tell one person today who can act. And whatever this is, it is not a person. Scripture is direct that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality, because it means you can stop losing to somebody you also love.

Jesus prays it and He does not pray for a feeling

There is a line in the prayer Jesus prays the night before everything, and it is worth noticing what He asks for and what He does not.

Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.John 17:17

He is praying for people who are about to have a very hard time. He knows exactly what is coming for them. And what He asks for on their behalf is that they be set apart, and the means He names is truth, and then He says plainly where the truth is: thy word is truth.

Not: give them confidence. Not: make them feel it. Not: help them to receive what they have been telling everybody else.

He locates the truth in a place outside them, and asks that they be worked on by it.

That is the whole distinction a woman in a parking lot needs, because what she has just discovered is that she cannot make a true sentence land on herself by saying it well. She is good at saying things. That is precisely the problem: she has just proved that her ability to deliver a sentence is not what makes it true, because she delivered one perfectly and it did nothing.

You are being set apart by something located outside you, and it does not need your voice to work on you. That is not a comfort at a car door: John 17:17 puts the truth in the word and makes the sanctifying something done to people rather than by them, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an outside thing work on the inside of a woman who cannot receive her own voice rather than the conviction anybody can put into a sentence.

The flatness is information about acoustics, not about truth

Here is what needs saying carefully, because this is where somebody like her gets hurt.

Nothing on this page is telling her that her flat feeling is a lie or a failure. It is neither. It is a completely honest report about what it is like to hear your own voice say a thing about you, which is a strange and unreliable acoustic and always has been.

There is a reason nobody can tickle themselves. There is a reason a compliment from your own mouth does nothing while the same words from somebody who knows you can undo you in a second. That is not a spiritual defect. It is how a person is built, and it is why the whole New Testament has believers saying things to each other rather than to their own reflections.

So the sentence coming out flat is a fact about the acoustics of a parking lot with one person in it. It is not a fact about the sentence.

You have not failed to believe something, and the flatness measured the room and not the word. The written word puts the truth outside the hearer and makes the sanctifying a thing done to them, and the Spirit of God is the one applying it, never the credibility anybody can manufacture in their own voice.

There is no method on this page. Nothing here is a technique for making a verse land, because a technique can be performed badly and the failure of it would come straight back onto you, and you have carried enough of that already this evening.
