Armour God GivesIsaiah 59:17

He Wore It First

This message is for the suspicion that all of this armor talk is a costume somebody expects me to keep up

He has been at this table since about nine and the lamp is the only light in the house that is still on.

Two books open and a third one holding the second one flat. A cold cup at his elbow that he will not drink and will not move. The window has gone completely black, so the room is in the window now, doubled, and every so often he catches himself in it and looks away.

He is not studying for anything. Nobody set him this. He came to the table because of a thing that had been bothering him for about six months and that he has not said to a living soul, including his wife, including the man he walks with on a Thursday.

The thing is this. He has heard the armor passage his whole life. He has heard people talk about putting it on, and he has watched grown men speak about it in a certain voice, and every single time, somewhere underneath, a small dry part of him has thought: this is a costume.

Not a lie. He would not go that far. A costume. Language people put on because it makes an ordinary Tuesday feel like something, and which he has never been able to wear without feeling faintly ridiculous, and which he has therefore been quietly declining for about twenty years while nodding along.

And tonight he has gone looking for where the language comes from, because that is what he does when a thing will not leave, and he has found it, and he is now sitting very still.

It is in Isaiah. Centuries before the letter to Ephesus. And in Isaiah the breastplate and the helmet are not on a believer at all.

They are on God.

That is you at your own table, or your own steering wheel, or your own three in the morning.

Because you have had the same dry thought and you have never said it either. You have suspected that all of this is dressing up. And the fact that you have been suspecting it while continuing to show up is not hypocrisy, it is honesty with the volume turned down, and it is about to be answered.

Two plain things before anything else. If your version of this includes somebody who frightens you or hurts you, nothing here is telling you to stay and take it; tell one person today who can act. And whatever this is, it is not a person. Not the men who used the voice. Not anybody in your house. Scripture is direct that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality, because it means you can stop losing to somebody you also love.

The armor was His clothing before it was ever ours

Here is what he found at that table, and it changes the category the whole thing belongs to.

For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke.Isaiah 59:17

Read who the he is. It is not the reader. It is not Israel. It is God, described by the prophet as a warrior who dresses Himself because there is nobody else who will do what needs doing, and who puts on righteousness across the chest and salvation on the head.

Now go and stand in Ephesians 6 with that in your hand. The breastplate of righteousness. The helmet of salvation. The exact two pieces, in the exact two places, handed over to ordinary people in a letter written to a small congregation in a port city.

It is not a metaphor somebody invented to make a Tuesday feel important. It is His own clothing, taken off and put on somebody else.

You are wearing what belonged to Him first, and it was never a costume anybody expected you to keep up. That is not a warm thought for a man alone at a table: Isaiah 59:17 puts the breastplate and the helmet on God Himself before a single believer is ever asked to wear them, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a handed thing sit on a real person at eleven at night rather than the conviction anybody can generate about it.

Notice which piece He kept

There is one more thing in that verse and it is the most pastoral line in this entire article, though it does not look like it at first.

He put on the garments of vengeance.

He kept that one. It is not in the list in Ephesians. Belt, breastplate, shoes, shield, helmet, and what is spoken, which is His word and not yours. Nowhere in that passage is the reader handed the settling of accounts, and it is not an oversight. It is the same distribution as everywhere else in Scripture: vengeance is Mine, saith the Lord.

Which means that the thing you have quietly been carrying, the ledger, the case, the running record of who did what and what ought to happen about it, was never issued to you. He is still wearing that garment. He has not put it down and He has not delegated it.

You have been carrying a garment that was never handed to you, and He never once asked you for it. The written word says vengeance belongs to God and hands the believer a defensive kit and one verb, and His Spirit is the one who makes a man able to set down something he has held for twenty years.

And there is no procedure here. Nothing on this page can be performed correctly or incorrectly, and that absence is deliberate, because the moment a thing can be got wrong the whole weight of the outcome slides back onto the one doing it, and it has been on your shoulders long enough.

You are covered in His own clothing, right now, at a table with a cold cup on it. Scripture calls the armor whole and calls it God's, and the Spirit of God is what makes a given thing real on a specific man on a specific night.

The breakthrough

So nothing is being dressed up at this table tonight.

You are covered in what He wore, and it is not language, and it is not atmosphere. That is what stands written in Isaiah 59:17 and handed on in Ephesians 6, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written real on one man in one room rather than real as a general idea.

The suspicion that this is all a costume has no right to stay in this house. The word puts the breastplate on God before it puts it on anybody else, and the Spirit of God has not been waiting for you to feel convinced before He covers you.

One plain thing before we finish, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If the last six months have taken you as far as thinking your household would be lighter without you here, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit at your table and let it be quiet. Say it out loud to somebody who can act, tonight, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the lamp still on. Nothing needs working up: this covering is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than performed, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a skeptical body, never the conviction anybody can produce at eleven at night. And what He does about the ledger you are setting down, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Dry thought at this table, you are answered and I am not going to keep you. Isaiah 59:17 puts the breastplate on God Himself, so what I have on is His own clothing and never once a costume.
  2. Ledger I have carried for twenty years, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word keeps the garments of vengeance on God and hands me a defensive kit and one verb, so you were never issued to me and I am not holding you.
  3. Lord, You wore this before I did and then You put it on me. Scripture says an helmet of salvation upon His head, and Your Spirit has kept that same helmet on mine through every year I suspected the whole thing. I thank You, and I am opening my hands right here and naming one thing You gave me, out loud, before I turn off the lamp.
