Armour God GivesPsalm 91:4

The Vest Buckles At The Back

This message is for getting ready for a crossing I never asked to make and finding I cannot fasten my own straps

He can do the front. It is the one at the back he cannot reach, and he has been pretending otherwise for about ninety seconds.

Early. The water is doing that thing where it looks like poured metal and the light has not properly arrived yet. The boat is small and it smells of diesel and salt and the rope locker. Somebody is coiling a line. Somebody else is looking at the sky in a way that is not casual. The crossing is two hours and they are going because they have to, not because anybody wants to.

He did not ask for this. That is the part sitting under everything. He is going because the person who used to make this crossing cannot make it anymore, and because it is his family, and because there is nobody else, and none of that was ever put to him as a question.

So he is standing in the stern doing up a life vest. Front buckle, fine. Waist strap, fine. And then the one that goes around and clips at the back, the one that is the actual point of the whole vest, because without it the thing rides up over your head in the water and does nothing at all.

He reaches. He cannot get it. He turns slightly, the way people do, as though a different angle solves the fact that his arms attach where they attach. He tries again. He is going to do it, because he has done everything else on his own since he was nineteen and he is not going to start asking now.

And an older man comes past behind him carrying two fuel cans and does not say a word, does not stop, does not make it a moment, and reaches around and clips it. One motion. Then he keeps walking.

The younger man stands there for a second in a vest that is now actually a vest.

That is you, standing wherever you stand, on the edge of a crossing nobody asked you if you wanted.

You can do the front. You have been doing the front for years. And there is one fastening you have never once managed on your own, and you have arranged your whole life so that nobody watches you fail to reach it.

Two plain things before anything else. If your version of this includes somebody frightening you or hurting you, nothing on this page is telling you to get in the boat and take it; tell one person today who can act. And whatever this crossing is against, it is not a person. Not the one who left it to you. Not the ones on the shore. Scripture says it flatly: the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality, because it means you can stop losing to somebody you also love.

The psalm puts the covering where you cannot reach

There is a line in Psalm 91 that people put on cards, and the actual mechanics of it are about a place on your body you cannot get to.

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.Psalm 91:4

He shall cover thee. He does the covering. The bird does not instruct the chick on wing technique. It puts itself over the thing that cannot cover itself, and it does it from above and behind, in the exact place the small thing has no way of reaching.

And then the second half, which is the part that does the work here: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. His truth. Not your grip on it. Not how well you have been holding your nerve since nineteen. The thing that is the case, standing between you and what is out there, because He put it there.

You are fastened at the back by hands that were never yours. That is not a soothing line for a cold morning on the water: Psalm 91:4 makes God the one who covers and truth itself the shield, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a fastened thing hold on a real man in a real boat rather than the reach anybody can manage from inside their own arms.

Say the whole thing plainly. There is a clip on you that you did not clip. There always was.

Nobody made it a moment, and that is the mercy

Notice how the older man did it, because that is not a small detail and it is doing theological work.

He did not stop. He did not make eye contact and hold it. He did not say you should have asked. He did not use it as an opportunity. He walked past with two fuel cans and reached around and clipped it and kept going, and in doing so he took nothing from the younger man except the one thing that needed taking, which was the pretending.

That is how the covering in this passage comes. Not as a lesson. Not as a transaction where you first admit your inadequacy in the correct posture and then receive. The bird covers the chick because that is what the bird is like.

You have been covered by somebody who never once asked you to perform the asking properly. The written word says He shall cover and calls His own truth the shield, and the Spirit of God has been the one holding it in place through years when you would not have accepted help offered any other way.

And there is no technique in any of this. Nothing on this page is a sequence you could get wrong, and that absence is deliberate, because the second a thing can be performed badly the whole weight of the outcome slides back onto the person performing it, and it has been on your shoulders since nineteen and it does not belong there.

You are covered from above and behind, right now, with the engine not started yet. Psalm 91:4 puts the wings over the one who cannot cover himself, and His Spirit is what makes that a fact in a body on a real morning rather than a line on a card.

The breakthrough

So nothing gets manufactured in this boat.

You are covered, you are fastened, and the covering was never something your arms had to be long enough for. That is what stands written in Psalm 91:4, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true on one specific man in one specific stern rather than true out there somewhere in general.

The rule that you are not allowed to need the back strap done has no right to stay on this boat. The word puts the covering in the place the wearer cannot reach precisely because the wearer cannot reach it, and the Spirit of God has not been waiting for you to prove you can before He does it.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If this crossing has taken you as far as thinking your family would be steadier without you here, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit down and let it be quiet. That is not a detour from any of this. It is the same thing.

Declare this over yourself

Say these before the engine starts. There is nothing to work up to: this covering is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than reached for, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that has held out since nineteen, never the reach you can manage on your own. And what He does about this crossing and the water in it, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Crossing I never asked to make, you are not going out with an unfastened man in the stern. Psalm 91:4 says He shall cover me and that His truth is my shield, and both of those were done before I stepped on board.
  2. Rule that says I do my own straps, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word puts the covering exactly where a person cannot reach, on purpose, so you have never had anything to hold over me but the pretending.
  3. Lord, You clipped the one at the back without making it a moment, and You have done it on every crossing of my life. Scripture says under His wings shalt thou trust, and Your Spirit has been the hands going round behind me. I thank You, and I am opening my hands right here on this deck and naming one thing You gave me, out loud, before we go.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
