Somebody calls her strong again, and she says thank you, and she sets the crate down and stands still for about four seconds longer than the work requires.
First light at the market. The good hour, before the heat, when the light comes down the row sideways and everything looks better than it will at noon. Crates of mango and callaloo and sweet potato. A radio somewhere. Two men arguing pleasantly about a delivery that is late and will be late again next week.
She has been lifting crates on this row since she was nineteen. She is sixty now. She has lifted through two pregnancies, a funeral she does not talk about, four years when her sister was ill, and one stretch of about eighteen months that she has never described to another human being.
And every few days for forty one years, somebody has said the same thing to her, warmly, meaning it as a gift:
"You are so strong."
She says thank you. She always says thank you. And then this morning, for reasons she could not give you, she puts the crate down and stands there with her hands on her hips looking at nothing in particular, and the sentence comes up out of her the way a thing does when it has been waiting a long time.
Forty one years and nobody has ever once told me what is holding me up.
Not that she is strong. She knows she is strong. She has heard it from every mouth on this row. What nobody has told her, in four decades, is what the strength is made of, where it came from, or what happens on the day it stops, and she has been quietly braced for that day since roughly 1998.
She picks the crate back up. The light moves down the row. Nobody noticed.
That is you, and you know it is, because your version of you are so strong has been going on for years too.
It is a kind thing to say and it is also a door closing. Because once a person is strong, nobody asks any further, and you have spent a long time being the answer to other people's questions and never once the question.
Two plain things before anything else. If your version of this includes somebody frightening you or hurting you, nothing on this page is telling you to stand there and carry it; tell one person today who can act. And whatever this is, it is not a person. Not the ones who leaned. Not the ones who never asked. Scripture is direct that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality, because it means you can stop losing to somebody you also love.
Whole, and the word is doing real work
Here is the answer to a woman standing on a market row, and it is in one adjective.
Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.Ephesians 6:11
The whole armor. One word in the original, and it means the complete kit, the full set, everything a person needs, supplied together and supplied finished.
Which tells you two things at once, and the second one is the one you came for.
The first: nothing is missing. There is no partial issue for people who have had a hard forty one years, and no finer set for the ones whose lives look easier from the outside.
The second, and this is the whole point: it was never assembled by the person wearing it. A thing that comes whole comes from somewhere. Somebody made it, somebody completed it, and somebody handed it over intact. The wearer's job in that sentence is put on, which is the smallest verb available.
You are standing in something complete, and you never once put it together. That is not a compliment on a market row: Ephesians 6:11 calls the armor whole and calls it God's, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a finished thing actually hold on a real woman at first light rather than the strength she has been complimented on for four decades.
So the question you asked with your hands on your hips has an answer, and the answer is a person and not a quality.
What has been holding you up, precisely
Let us be exact, because vagueness is what has been done to you already and it is not a kindness.
What is holding this woman up is not her temperament. It is not her upbringing, though that gave her a great deal. It is not that coping has always been available, and it is not the sixty years of practice.
It is God, and He has been doing it with something He made and handed over whole, the entire time other people were admiring the wrong thing.
That distinction is not academic. It is the difference between bracing for the day the strength runs out and not having to. If the thing holding you up is a quality you possess, then it thins in the end and the person goes down with it, and that has been known here since 1998 and a whole interior life has been organized around it. If the thing holding you up is a covering He supplies whole, then the day your strength thins is a day you find out what has actually been underneath it.
You have been held up by God Himself through every year they were congratulating you. The written word calls it the whole armor of God and never once locates it inside the believer, and His Spirit has been the one keeping it on a woman who has been braced for collapse since before some of these traders were born.
And notice: there is no method here. Nothing on this page is a procedure you could do correctly or incorrectly, because the moment a thing can be got wrong, the whole weight of the outcome slides back onto the person doing it, and it has been sitting on your back since you were nineteen and it does not belong there.
You are covered in something finished, right now, on this row, with the light still sideways. Ephesians 6:11 says put on the whole armor, and the Spirit of God is what makes a handed thing sit on a real body on a real morning.
So nothing gets built this morning. There is nothing to reinforce.
You are covered in the whole thing, and it came to you finished, and the assignment attached to it is stand. That stands written in Ephesians 6:11, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true on a specific woman on a specific row rather than true in the abstract.
The day you have been braced for since 1998 has no right to stay in your chest any longer. The word never locates the covering in the strength of the person wearing it, and the Spirit of God is not holding you up on the condition that you keep being impressive about it.
One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then goes on. If the years of this have taken you as far as thinking the row would run smoother without you here, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit down with you and be slow about it. Being strong has never once meant doing that alone.
Declare this over yourself
Say these with the crate down. Nothing needs working up: this covering is yours in Christ and it was given to you whole rather than assembled, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that has lifted since 1984, never the strength anybody has complimented. And what He does about the years still ahead on this row, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.
- Row where they call me strong, you are not the thing that has been holding me up. Ephesians 6:11 says the armor is whole and it is God's, and it came to me finished before anybody on this street said a word about my back.
- Day I have been braced for since 1998, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word never puts the covering inside the person wearing it, so you have never once had a collapse to promise me.
- Lord, You have held me up through forty one years while other people admired the wrong thing. Scripture says put on the whole armor of God, and Your Spirit has been the one keeping it on me every morning of it. I thank You, and I am opening my hands right here on this row and naming one thing You gave me, out loud, before the heat comes.
