Armour God GivesIsaiah 61:10

He Put It On You At The Door

This message is for the eleven o'clock feeling that everybody else was issued something for this and I am standing in it in my own clothes

The door is open and the cold is coming in around the edges of it, and neither of them will be the one to say so.

The son has his keys in his hand already. He is thirty one and he has somewhere to be, and the somewhere is not good, and both of them know it and neither of them has named it. His father stands half a step behind him in the hallway holding a coat. Not a new coat. The heavy one, the wool one, the one that smells faintly of the shop and of thirty winters, the one with the pocket that was restitched by hand because nobody throws out a coat like that.

"I am fine," the son says, and he is not looking around.

His father does not argue. He has learned not to argue at doorways. He simply steps in close, the way you do with a child who is standing still for a moment by accident, and he lifts the coat and settles it over the son's shoulders from behind. He does not hand it over. He puts it on him. The weight of it comes down across the back and the son feels his own shoulders drop half an inch under it, the way shoulders do under a weight that is carrying them rather than being carried.

There are two small glasses of tea on the step, going cold, from a conversation that never got started.

His father smooths the shoulder once, flat with the palm, and steps back. He says nothing about where the son is going. He says nothing about the year they have had. He says one sentence, and it is not advice.

"It was always yours."

And the son goes out into the cold in a coat he did not choose, did not buy, did not ask for and cannot get out of without deciding to take it off, and halfway down the street he notices he is warm and cannot work out exactly when that happened.

That is you, standing in your own hallway at eleven at night.

Because somewhere along the line you picked up the idea that everybody else got issued something for this and you did not. Everybody else seems to have a thing they stand in. A confidence, a covering, a certainty, a something. And you have been going out into it in your own clothes, and you have got very good at not mentioning that, and the whole time you have been quietly doing the arithmetic on whether you are the only one.

I am not going to tell you to be braver. That would be one more thing to wear that you have to make yourself.

And before anything else: whatever this is, it is not a person. Not the one who did not check on you. Not the one at work. Not the one you married. Scripture is direct about it, and it is a mercy rather than a technicality, because it means you can stop losing quietly to somebody you also love.

The prophet does not say he got dressed

There is a line in Isaiah that people quote at weddings and at ordinations and hardly ever at eleven o'clock at night, which is where it actually belongs.

I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.Isaiah 61:10

Read the verbs slowly, because everything is in the verbs.

He hath clothed me. Not I clothed myself. Not I found the garments and worked out how they fasten. He hath covered me. Covered is a thing done to a person from outside, by somebody standing close enough to reach, the way a coat is put on from behind.

The prophet is not describing his effort. He is describing a doorway, and a hand, and a weight arriving across his shoulders that he did not lift.

You are already covered, and you are covered in something you did not make. That is not my encouragement to a tired man in a hallway: Isaiah 61:10 puts every verb in that sentence on God and not one of them on the prophet, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a given thing actually rest on a person rather than the amount of resolve they can find at eleven at night.

Which is why the arithmetic you have been doing is the wrong arithmetic. You have been counting what you brought. Nobody in Scripture is ever asked what they brought.

What the letter to Ephesus is actually shaped like

Here is the thing about the armor passage that goes past almost everybody, and it will take the temperature down rather than up, which is the correct direction.

Count the pieces. Belt, breastplate, shoes, shield, helmet. Every one of them is defensive. Every single one. There is one item in the list that is not, and it is not something you swing at anybody; it is what is spoken, and what is spoken is the word of God, which is not yours either.

And then count the verb. Stand. It is there four times in six verses and there is no fifth verb. Not advance. Not conquer. Not push through. Stand.

So the picture that has been running in your head, the one where a proper believer is out there fighting well and you are the one in ordinary clothes losing, was never in the passage. The passage is a tired person being dressed by somebody else and told that upright is the whole assignment.

You have not been failing at something everyone else is managing, because the thing you pictured was never the thing. The written word gives the reader an armor that is put on rather than earned, and His Spirit is the one holding it in place through a week nobody else knows about.

I am not going to hand you a method. If there were steps for this, you could get them wrong, and the moment a thing can be got wrong the whole weight comes back onto your shoulders, which is where it has been sitting for years and where it does not belong.

You are standing in something given, right now, in your own hallway, with your keys already in your hand. Scripture calls it a robe and a covering and a whole armor, all three of them handed over, and the Spirit of God is what makes a handed thing sit on a real person on a real Tuesday.

The breakthrough

So nothing gets manufactured here tonight. There is nothing to work up.

You are dressed for this, and you were dressed before you knew there was a this. That stands written: God clothes and God covers, and the whole armor in Ephesians is taken up rather than built, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true on a specific person in a specific hallway rather than true in general.

The idea that you turned up underequipped has no right to stay in this house. The word does not describe a believer who has to supply the covering, and the Spirit of God is not waiting to see whether you can produce it before He puts it on you.

One plain thing before we go on, said the way a friend would say it and then carry on. If this stretch has taken you as far as thinking the people in your life would be better off without you here, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit down with you. And if the cold in your house is coming from somebody who frightens you, standing has never once meant staying somewhere that is not safe. Say it out loud to somebody who can act.

Now. There is a coat on you. Nobody has ever asked you to name it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with your hands still open. There is nothing to work up to: this covering is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than achieved, so you are speaking what has already been settled and not talking yourself into a mood. Scripture is under every word of it and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live, never the strength you can find at this hour. And what He does about the road you are walking out into, and when, is His to decide and was never on your list.

  1. Cold hallway at eleven at night, you are not a report on what I lack, and I am not standing here in my own clothes. Isaiah 61:10 says He clothed me and He covered me, and both of those verbs were finished before I reached the door.
  2. Thought that I turned up short, get out in the name of Jesus. God has never once asked me what I brought, and the armor He gives is taken up and not manufactured, so you have nothing left to accuse me with.
  3. Lord, You put this on me Yourself and You did it from behind, where I could not see it happening. Scripture says the garments are Yours and the robe is Yours, and Your Spirit has kept them on my shoulders through a year I could not have carried. I am opening my hands now and naming one thing You gave me, out loud, in this house.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
