Armour God GivesEphesians 6:16

The Shield Is Not Yours To Make

This message is for being told to suit up for a night I did not choose, when nobody has ever handed me anything to suit up in

Ten to eight, and she is standing in a corridor with one arm in an apron, and she has been standing there about four seconds longer than she meant to.

The night has not started. It has that particular held quality a building gets in the last minutes before the shift turns over, when the day people are talking a little too fast about handover and the night people are still coming in with the cold on their coats. Somebody's radio is going in the little room at the end. There is a cart half loaded outside a door.

She pulls the apron on properly. Gloves out of the box, two, snapped. She checks the pocket for the pen she always loses.

And a voice she likes, a sister she has worked beside for six years, goes past her carrying a stack of folded sheets and says the thing people say, warm and quick and meaning nothing by it at all:

"Suit up, love. Long one tonight."

She laughs. She says something back. And she stands there four seconds longer than she meant to, holding a plastic apron in a corridor, thinking a sentence she would never say out loud to another living soul.

Suit up in what.

Because she has been doing this for eleven years and she has never once been handed anything. She has been handed schedules and instructions and other people's worst nights. Nobody ever gave her a thing to put on. She has been walking into rooms she did not choose, at hours she did not pick, and the whole time she has assumed that everybody else has something she does not have, and that whatever it is, they got it at some point when she was busy.

Then the doors go and the night starts and she does not think about it again until three in the morning.

That is you. Your corridor might be a stairwell or a school gate or the top of your own stairs at ten to eight in the evening. But you know that four second pause, and you know the sentence.

Before anything else, two plain things, because they matter more than teaching. If somebody in your life is frightening you or hurting you, nothing on this page is telling you to stand there and absorb it; tell one person today who can act. And whatever you are actually up against, it is not a person. Not the one who put you on this shift, not the family who leaned on you, not the one at home. Scripture says it flatly: the struggle is not against flesh and blood. And that is a mercy rather than a technicality, because it means you can stop losing to somebody you also love.

Above all, and it is not yours to make

There is one verse that answers the question you asked in a corridor, and it does it in the first two words.

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.Ephesians 6:16

Taking. Not making. Not weaving. Not proving there is enough of it. Taking, the way you take an apron off a stack that somebody else folded and put there before your shift.

And above all, which in that sentence does not mean the most important out of a list of things you must accomplish. It means the piece that goes over everything else, the one held out in front, the one that catches what is coming so that nothing has to reach the pieces underneath.

You are holding something you did not make, and it has been catching things all night for eleven years. That is not a warm word from somebody who has never done a night shift: Ephesians 6:16 has the shield taken up rather than manufactured, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a given thing actually hold in a real corridor at three in the morning rather than the amount of faith a woman can feel while she is tired.

Now hear the part that has to be said out loud, because this is exactly where people get hurt. This verse is not saying that whatever gets through was your fault for not holding it right. Nobody is grading your grip. The shield is faith, and faith in Scripture is the open hand that receives, never a price God charges before He will cover you.

I am going to say that again plainly, because somebody reading this has been carrying it for years. You were not left uncovered on any night of this because you did not believe hard enough. The written word calls the shield a thing taken up and never once weighs it, and His Spirit has been the one holding it steady over a woman who did not feel one thing at four in the morning.

The suit was on before the sister said it

Here is the small, enormous thing about that moment in the corridor.

She was already dressed. That is the joke of it. She had the apron on. She had the gloves. She had eleven years of something in her that the building runs on. And a warm voice went past and said suit up, and she heard it as an instruction she had failed, when it was only a greeting.

Most of what has been said over you about fighting was a greeting too. People pass each other in corridors saying the language of battle without meaning anything precise by it, and a tired person hears an assignment in it, and then carries the assignment.

Count what the passage actually asks. Belt, breastplate, shoes, shield, helmet: every piece defensive, every piece handed over, and one verb attached to the whole of it. Stand. Four times in six verses, no fifth verb, nothing about advancing on anybody.

You are covered on the way in, not on the way out, and the covering does not wait for the night to prove you deserve it. Scripture puts the shield above all and calls the whole armor God's own, and the Spirit of God is what makes a handed thing hold on a specific woman on a specific shift.

There is no procedure here. Nothing on this page is a sequence you could get wrong, because the moment a thing can be got wrong the entire weight of the outcome slides back onto the one performing it, and it has been sitting on your shoulders for eleven years and it does not belong there.

The breakthrough

So nothing has to be produced here tonight. There is nothing to summon.

You are covered, you are carrying something given, and the assignment on you is to stand and not to conquer anybody. That is what stands written in Ephesians 6:16 and in the four standings around it, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written land on one woman in one corridor rather than land in general.

The sentence that says everyone else was issued something you missed has no right to stay in this building. The word hands the same whole armor to every believer without an inventory of who deserves it, and the Spirit of God has not been waiting for you to feel ready before He covers you.

One plain thing before we go on, the way a friend says it and then carries on. If the long run of this has taken you as far as thinking the ward, or the house, or the family would run better without you here, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit with you and not hurry you. Say it out loud to somebody who can act.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the apron on if you have to. Nothing needs working up: this covering is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than achieved, so you are speaking back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit makes it live in a tired body, never the feeling you can find at three in the morning. And what He does about this night and the ones after it, and when, is His to decide and was never on your list.

  1. Corridor at ten to eight, you are not the place where I find out what I am short of. Ephesians 6:16 says the shield is taken and not made, and it was in my hand before anybody said the word suit up.
  2. Sentence that says I missed the handout, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word gives the whole armor to every believer without an inventory, and you have never once been able to show me the list I was left off.
  3. Lord, You have held this over me through eleven years of nights and I did not feel a single one of them. Scripture says above all take the shield of faith, and Your Spirit has been the one keeping it out in front of me. I thank You, and I am opening my hands right here in this corridor and naming one thing You gave me, out loud, before the doors go.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
