My Read Of The Room

This message is for trusting my own read of everything except when it comes to me, where I have been wrong for twenty years

He can tell you the state of a room in three seconds and he has been wrong about himself for twenty years.

The back of a hall, coat still on, which is a thing he does and knows he does. Forty or fifty people. Coffee in the corner in the urn that runs out at exactly the wrong moment every single week. Somebody has brought a cake in a tin because somebody always does.

He has been here ninety seconds and he already knows: the woman by the window has had a hard week and has not told anybody, the two men near the door are not actually talking about what they are talking about, and the young couple at the end are fine, genuinely fine, and it is nice to see.

He is right about all three. He is right about this sort of thing constantly. It is not a trick and it is not mystical, it is twenty five years of paying attention to people and it has made him useful in a way that has cost him something.

And in the same ninety seconds, without any effort at all, he has also read himself, and the reading is this: they are being polite. You are tolerated here. If you stopped coming, there would be a small relief.

That is completely false. He would know it was false about anybody else in this room inside three seconds.

He gets a coffee. The urn does the thing. He does not take his coat off.

That is you, and your hall might be a family, a team, a group of friends of thirty years, a marriage in which you can read the other person accurately and cannot read yourself at all.

Two plain things before anything else. If somebody in your life is frightening you or hurting you, nothing here is telling you to stand in the room and absorb it; tell one person today who can act. And whatever this is, it is not a person. Not the two men near the door. Scripture is direct that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality, because it means you can stop losing to somebody you also love.

Balaam says it about God and it is a sentence about reliability

There is a line spoken by a man who was not even on the right side, and it is one of the plainest things in Scripture about what God is like.

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?Numbers 23:19

The whole verse is about one property, and the property is that what He says and what is the case are the same thing.

Hath he said, and shall he not do it? It is put as a question because the answer is so obvious that stating it would be weaker.

Now put that beside a man at the back of a hall.

He has two readings in front of him. One is his own, produced in ninety seconds by an instrument that is genuinely excellent about other people and demonstrably unreliable about himself. The other is God's, which is written down, and which has the property that Balaam names: it does not say a thing and then turn out to have meant something else.

That is not a contest between a feeling and a doctrine. It is a contest between two readings, and one of them is by somebody who does not get people wrong.

You are looked at by somebody whose reading of you does not need correcting later. That is not a nice line for a man in a coat: Numbers 23:19 puts the reliability in what God says rather than in the hearer, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that hold in a body that has been wrong about itself for twenty years rather than the accuracy anybody can manage at the back of a room.

Your instrument is not broken, it is out of range

Here is the thing that needs saying carefully, because a man like this will draw the wrong conclusion.

His read is not faulty. That is the mistake everybody makes with him, and the mistake he makes with himself. He does not have a bad instrument. He has an excellent one, pointed at the one target it cannot resolve.

That is ordinary. A person cannot see their own face without something else in the room to do it for them, and nobody thinks that is a defect of eyesight. A man who can read forty people in ninety seconds and cannot read himself has not failed at anything; he has simply run into the one thing that instrument was never going to reach.

And nobody in this article is telling him that what he feels in that hall is a lie. He genuinely feels it. It is real as a feeling and it is not accurate as a reading, and those are two different statements and only the second one is being made.

You have been standing on your own read of yourself and it was never the ground. The written word puts the reliability in what God has said and never once in the hearer's assessment, and the Spirit of God is the one holding that under a man with his coat on, never the sharpness of anybody's perception.

There is no key on this page and no method. Nothing here is a technique for making a verse override a feeling, because a technique can be performed badly and that would put the whole weight back on the man doing it.

The breakthrough

So nothing has to be worked out at the back of this hall.

You are seen accurately, right now, coat on, near the urn. That is what stands written in Numbers 23:19, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one man in one room rather than true as a general point about divine faithfulness.

The reading that says you are tolerated here has no right to stay in this building. The word puts what God says and what is the case in the same place, and the Spirit of God has never once asked anybody to resolve a target their instrument cannot reach.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If twenty years of this have taken you as far as thinking there would be a small relief if you stopped coming, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will stand by an urn with you and not need the whole story. Do that first, today, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with your coat still on if that is where this finds you. There is nothing to work up to: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than achieved, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that has been wrong about itself for twenty years, never the sharpness anybody can bring to a room. And whatever He does about the rest of it, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Ninety second read of myself at the back of this hall, you are a real feeling and you are not an accurate reading. Numbers 23:19 says God is not a man, that He should lie, and His reading of me has never needed correcting afterward.
  2. Verdict that I am tolerated here, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word puts what God says and what is actually the case in the same place, so you have never once had an instrument worth outvoting Him with.
  3. Lord, You have read me correctly every week I have stood at the back of this room with my coat on. Scripture says hath He said, and shall He not do it, and Your Spirit is why that holds over a man who can read everybody but himself. I thank You, and I am copying one verse out by hand right now and putting it where I will see it tonight.
