The Page That Outlived Them

This message is for wanting one thing under me that will still be there when everything I can currently see is gone

The page in front of him has outlived every hand that ever held it, and he has been sitting here long enough to have worked out that this is the only reason he came down.

A study, late. One lamp with a green shade that his wife has offered to replace twice and that is not going anywhere. A stand with an old book open on it, and beside that a newer copy, and beside that a notebook that has three lines in it from an hour ago and nothing since.

He came down to work. He has done no work.

What he has actually been doing is going along the shelf with his eyes, which is a thing he does when something is bothering him and he has not admitted what.

Every book on that shelf was written by somebody who is dead. That is not morbid, it is simply arithmetic; almost all books are. And the men who owned this particular copy before him are dead too, and one of them wrote his name in the front in 1911 in a hand that suggests he was extremely pleased with himself, and there is a pressed flower at the back of it that somebody put there and that has been there longer than anybody now alive.

And the page says exactly what it said to the man in 1911.

That is the thing that got him. Not the age of it. The fact that it did not soften, or bend, or adapt itself, for any of them. It said the same words to a pleased young man with a fountain pen and to a woman who pressed a flower into it, and it is saying them to him at half past eleven with everything currently going on in his life.

He has not written a fourth line.

That is you, and your shelf might be a phone with a photograph on it, a house, a job, a body, a set of arrangements you have quietly noticed are temporary.

Two plain things before anything else. If somebody in your life is frightening you or hurting you, nothing here is telling you to stay and absorb it; tell one person today who can act. And whatever this is, it is not a person. Scripture is direct that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality, because it means you can stop losing to somebody you also love.

Jesus makes a comparison and He does not choose a small thing

There is a sentence where Jesus sets two things side by side, and He deliberately picks the largest thing available.

Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.Matthew 24:35

He could have said many things.

He could have said: kingdoms pass away. Reputations pass away. Money passes away. Every one of those would have been true and every one of them would have been the sort of thing people nod at.

He says heaven and earth.

Which is everything. Not a category of things, not the fragile end of the spectrum, not the obviously temporary. The sky, the ground, the whole apparatus inside which a man in a study is currently worrying about his arrangements.

And He puts His own words on the other side of the sentence, in the same breath, as the thing that stays when that goes.

You are standing on the only object in the sentence that outlasts the other one. That is not a grand thought at half past eleven: Matthew 24:35 chooses the largest possible thing to be temporary and puts the word on the far side of it, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that hold under a man going along a shelf with his eyes rather than the perspective anybody can reach in a study late at night.

The temporariness of everything is not a threat here

Now the thing that has to be said carefully, because a verse like that can be used to frighten people and it is not for that.

Nothing here is telling you that the things that pass do not matter. They matter enormously. The pleased young man in 1911 mattered. The flower somebody pressed mattered to whoever pressed it. Your house and your arrangements and your body matter, and this article is not going to do the thing where a person's real attachments get dismissed as though caring about them were a failure of spiritual seriousness.

And nothing here is telling you that noticing the temporariness is morbid or faithless. It is accurate. He said it Himself, and He said it about the sky.

What is on offer is not a correction to your noticing. It is a second fact, placed beside the first one, in the same sentence, by the same speaker: one thing in the picture is not on that list.

You have not been wrong about how much of this is temporary, and you were never told to pretend otherwise. The written word puts heaven and earth on the passing side and the word on the other, and the Spirit of God is the one holding a man on the side that stays, never the amount of detachment anybody can manage about the things they love.

There is no key on this page and no method, and nothing here that would need you to be in a particular state for it to work.

The breakthrough

So nothing has to be resolved in this study tonight.

You are standing on the one thing in that sentence that does not pass, right now, at half past eleven, with a notebook that has three lines in it. That is what stands written in Matthew 24:35, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one man at one desk rather than true as a general statement about eternity.

The quiet accounting of everything that is temporary has no right to stay the last word in this room. The word puts the sky and the ground on the passing side and itself on the other, and the Spirit of God does not soften a sentence for any generation that reads it.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If the last few weeks have taken you as far as thinking that everything ends anyway and that yours ending sooner would not alter much, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit in that study with you and let it be quiet. Do that first, tonight, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these at the desk with the lamp still on. There is nothing to work up to: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than achieved, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that has been counting temporary things all evening, never the perspective anybody can reach at half past eleven. And whatever He does about everything currently going on, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Shelf of books written by people who are all dead, you are exactly what I have noticed and you are not the whole sentence. Matthew 24:35 says heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away, and He chose the biggest thing available to put on the other side.
  2. Quiet accounting of everything that ends, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word never once asked me to pretend that things are permanent, so you have nothing to reveal to me and no ground to take.
  3. Lord, You said the same words to a man in 1911 and to whoever pressed that flower and You are saying them to me tonight. Scripture says my words shall not pass away, and Your Spirit is why that holds under a lamp at half past eleven. I thank You, and I am copying one verse out by hand right now and putting it where I will see it tonight.
