It Arrived Whole In The Library

This message is for a memory arriving complete and without warning in the quietest room I could find

She has a pencil in her hand and she has stopped, and a whole afternoon from nineteen years ago has just arrived intact between one page and the next.

The reading room, the one with the long tables and the lamps that are all slightly different because they have been replaced one at a time over forty years. Four other people in here, all of them a long way off, all of them being quiet in that particular way people are quiet in a library, which is not silence but a kind of agreed hum.

She came here to work. She came here specifically because it is quiet, because at home there is a boiler and a road and a neighbor's television, and here there is a long table and a lamp and the sound of somebody two tables down turning a page.

She has read the same three lines four times.

And then it comes. Not gradually. Not as a memory that surfaces and gets clearer. It arrives whole, the way a room arrives when somebody turns a light on: the whole afternoon, the smell of it, what was said, the specific quality of the light on that day nineteen years ago, and what she was wearing, and the exact thing she thought at the time and did not say.

She does not move. Her pencil is still on the page.

The quiet, which was the reason she came, is now the thing that has let it in.

That is you, and your library might be a bath, a train, a service, a walk you take precisely because nothing happens on it.

Before anything else. Nothing on this page is medical advice, and nothing here is going to tell you that what your mind does with a memory is a spiritual condition. That is not mine to say and it would not be true. If memories have been arriving like this often, or if any of it has taken you somewhere darker, tell one person today who can act: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will sit at a table with you. And whatever arrived between one page and the next, it is not a person. Not whoever was in that afternoon nineteen years ago. Scripture says plainly that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and the relief in that is larger than it sounds.

And nothing here is a ritual. There is no sequence on this page you could get wrong, because a thing you could get wrong is no use whatsoever to a woman with a pencil frozen over a page.

The verse gives a hiding place and then does something odd

There is a line in a psalm that names three things in a row, and the third one is not what anybody expects.

Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.Psalm 32:7

Thou art my hiding place. Not thou hast given me one. He does not say God provides a shelter. He says God is the shelter, which means the hiding place is a Person and therefore goes wherever the person hiding goes. That matters enormously in a reading room, because a shelter you have to travel to is no use to somebody who cannot get up.

Thou shalt preserve me from trouble. Preserve is a keeping word, an ongoing word, a word about maintenance rather than rescue.

And then the third thing, and it is strange, and I have never quite got over it: thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.

Compass me about. Surrounded, on all sides. And what is doing the surrounding is not a wall. It is singing. About deliverance. Which is a picture of somebody hemmed in on every side by the sound of things having already gone well.

You are surrounded by songs about a rescue that has already happened, right now, at a long table. That is not a soothing phrase for a woman with a pencil in her hand: Psalm 32:7 makes God the hiding place and puts the surrounding in the completed key of deliverance, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a surrounding thing surround in a body that has just had nineteen years arrive whole rather than the amount of steadiness anybody can find in a reading room.

Nothing to do, in a place where nothing can be done

Here is what makes this usable, and it is where most teaching on this fails.

A memory that arrives whole does not arrive with a gap for a response. There is no moment between the page and the afternoon in which anybody gets to prepare. She cannot pray properly, cannot leave without making a noise, cannot look up a passage, cannot do anything in a sequence, because the thing was complete before she registered it starting.

So whatever is true has to be true already, and it has to require nothing, or it is not for this at all.

And that is precisely how the verse is built. He is the hiding place. He preserves. He compasses about. She is the object of all three and the agent of none, and there is nothing in the sentence she could do incorrectly.

You are hidden without having done a single thing since the light came on. The written word makes God Himself the shelter and the surrounding, and His Spirit is the one holding it around a real woman in a real reading room, never a technique performed correctly under pressure.

So there is one line here, and it is not a formula, and it does not fail if it comes out as three words. He is my hiding place. Or: I am surrounded. Said out loud, under your breath, at a long table. The words are not doing the hiding. Somebody is noticing out loud what is already the case.

You have never once had to reach a shelter that was already the room you were sitting in. Scripture makes the hiding place a Person and the surrounding a completed song, and the Spirit of God has been all the way round you every time an afternoon has arrived without knocking.

The breakthrough

So nothing has to be managed at this table.

You are hidden right now, in a reading room, with your pencil still on the page. That is what stands written in Psalm 32:7, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one woman at one lamp rather than true as a general remark about shelter.

The afternoon that arrived whole has no right to stay the only thing in this room. The word makes God Himself the hiding place and surrounds a person with songs of a rescue already accomplished, and the Spirit of God does not require anybody to prepare before He is where He is.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If afternoons have been arriving like this often, or if any of it has taken you as far as thinking the quiet would be easier for everybody without you in it, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit at a table with you and let it be slow. Do that first, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these at the table, hand over your heart, pencil down. There is nothing to work up to: this covering is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than reached for, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that has just had nineteen years arrive at once, never the steadiness anybody can find between two pages. And whatever He does about that afternoon, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Afternoon that arrived whole between one page and the next, you did not walk into an unsheltered room. Psalm 32:7 says Thou art my hiding place, and a hiding place that is a Person was already sitting at this table.
  2. Quiet that let it in, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word compasses me about with songs of deliverance, so you are not the only thing in this room and you never were.
  3. Lord, You were the room before I chose the room, and You did not move when it arrived. Scripture says Thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance, and Your Spirit is why that is true with a pencil frozen on a page. I thank You, and my hand is over my heart right now and I am saying it out loud.
