The Photograph I Was Not In

This message is for the ten seconds after I scroll into a photograph of an evening nobody told me about

Her thumb stops and the picture stays there, and it is a table full of people she knows, and there is a chair at the end that is not for her.

The end of a bed with the big light off and the small one on. Half past ten. She has been lying there scrolling for the amount of time everybody lies there scrolling, which is longer than anybody admits and shorter than it feels. Her socks are still on. There is a plate on the floor with the crusts on it.

And there it is. Friday. A table, a candle in a jar, somebody's hand blurred reaching for something. Six people. She can name all six.

It is not that she was excluded. That is the thing she will explain to herself in about forty minutes and it will be entirely true. It was probably last minute. Somebody probably assumed. There is likely a completely ordinary reason and if she asked, the reason would be given warmly and would be believable.

None of that is available in the first ten seconds.

In the first ten seconds there is a room going small around her and a very old sentence arriving with the whole thing already assembled: you are on the outside of this and you always have been.

She scrolls up. Then she scrolls back down to it. Then she puts the phone face down on the duvet and lies there with her hand still on it.

That is you, and your photograph might be a group chat you can see is active, a name tagged in something, a conversation that stopped when you walked over.

Before anything else. Nothing on this page is medical advice, and nothing here is going to tell you that what happens in you in those ten seconds is a spiritual condition. That is not mine to say and it would not be true. If evenings like this have been arriving often, or if any of it has taken you somewhere darker, tell one person today who can act: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will come and sit on the end of that bed. And whatever went small around you at half past ten, it is not those six people. Scripture is direct that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that matters here more than almost anywhere, because a photograph is very good at handing somebody six faces to be wrong about.

And nothing here is a ritual. There is no sequence on this page you could get wrong, because a thing that can be got wrong is no use at all to somebody at half past ten with a phone face down on a duvet.

Paul puts a life somewhere it cannot be photographed

There is a short sentence in Colossians that says where a person actually is, and it is not where the picture is.

For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.Colossians 3:3

Your life is hid.

Hid, meaning stored, kept, put somewhere. It is a word about location. And the location is with Christ in God, which is about as far from a table with a candle in a jar as it is possible to get.

Now, this is not saying that being left out does not hurt. It hurts. Paul is not in the business of telling anybody their evening was fine. What he is doing is answering a different question, the one that arrives underneath the picture, the one that is actually about whether a person exists in any real way when they are not in the frame.

And the answer is that the real thing was never in the frame at all. It is stored somewhere else. It was stored somewhere else on Friday, while six people were at a table, and it did not thin out because nobody photographed it.

You are held somewhere no photograph reaches, and you were there on Friday too. That is not a comfort at half past ten: Colossians 3:3 puts the life in a location and names the location, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a stored thing feel stored in a body that has just gone small rather than the amount of perspective anybody can find on the end of a bed.

Why it has to require nothing

Here is what makes this usable, and it is where most of what gets said about this fails.

Everything sensible about this photograph is available in about forty minutes. The ordinary explanation, the perspective, the knowledge that she is loved by at least three of those six. All true, all reachable, all completely unavailable at second four.

So whatever is true has to be true without her working anything out. She cannot reason at second four. She cannot pray properly. She cannot find a verse. She can barely put a phone down.

And that is exactly the shape of the sentence. Your life is hid. It is a statement of where something already is. She is the subject only in the sense that it is her life; she is not doing anything in that clause, and there is nothing there for her to get right.

You are stored safely without having done a single thing since your thumb stopped. The written word puts the life in a location and never asks anybody to put it there, and His Spirit is the one holding it, never a technique performed correctly at half past ten.

So there is one line, and it is not a formula and it does not fail if it comes out wrong. My life is hid with Christ in God. Or: I am kept somewhere this does not reach. Said out loud, quietly, to a ceiling. The words are not doing the keeping. Somebody is noticing out loud what is already the case.

You have never once had to be in a photograph to exist. Scripture stores the life with Christ and names the place, and the Spirit of God has been holding it there through every evening nobody told you about.

The breakthrough

So nothing has to be worked out on the end of this bed.

You are held right now, at half past ten, with your hand still on a phone that is face down. That is what stands written in Colossians 3:3, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one person in one bedroom rather than true as a general statement about the hidden life.

The sentence that says you have always been on the outside has no right to stay in this room. The word stores the life with Christ in God and never once locates it in a frame, and the Spirit of God does not wait for anybody to be included before He keeps them.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If evenings like this have been arriving often, or if any of it has taken you as far as thinking nobody would notice much either way, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit on the end of that bed and not need the whole story. Do that first, tonight, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these lying there, hand over your heart, phone face down. There is nothing to work up to: this covering is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than reached for, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that has gone small, never the perspective anybody can find at half past ten. And whatever He does about Friday and about those six, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Photograph I was not in, you do not hold my life and you never had it. Colossians 3:3 says my life is hid with Christ in God, and that was as true on Friday night as it is now.
  2. Sentence that says I have always been on the outside, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word stores my life in a place no table and no list has any authority over, so you have nothing left to place me outside of.
  3. Lord, You had me kept somewhere no photograph reaches, on Friday, while I was here with my socks on. Scripture says your life is hid with Christ in God, and Your Spirit is why that is true at half past ten with a plate on the floor. I thank You, and my hand is over my heart right now and I am saying it out loud.
