The Gate Opened At Eleven

This message is for the moment I hear a car on the gravel at the wrong time of day and I know before anybody says a word

She has a clothespin in her mouth and half a sheet in her hands, and she hears tires on the gravel, and she knows.

Eleven in the morning, which is the wrong time. Everybody who is coming has already come. The mail has come. The man about the water is Thursday. Nobody drives up that track at eleven on an ordinary weekday unless something has happened, and she has lived on this ground long enough that her body worked that out about a second and a half before her mind did.

The sheet is wet and heavy and half of it is over the line. There is a basket at her feet with four more in it and a bag of pins on the post. The wind is doing that thing where the sheets fill and go slack and fill again, and one corner of the one she is hanging keeps trying to get away from her.

She does not turn round.

That is the part she would tell you about if she ever told anybody. Not the fear. The way she carried on for another two or three seconds, pinning a corner, with everything in her already gone cold, because turning round would make it real and there was a sheet in her hands.

The car door goes. Gravel. Two sets of feet.

She takes the pin out of her mouth. She turns round.

That is you, and your gravel might be a phone ringing at a wrong hour, a car pulling up outside, a name on a screen, a knock at a door on a day when nobody knocks.

Before anything else. Nothing on this page is medical advice, and nothing here is going to tell you that what your body does in a moment like that is a spiritual condition. That is not mine to say and it would not be true. If moments like this have been arriving often, or if any of it has taken you somewhere darker, tell one person today who can act: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will come and stand in that yard with you. And whatever has come up that track, what you are up against is not a person. Not the ones walking toward you and not the one they have come about. Scripture is flat that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality.

And nothing here is a ritual. There is no sequence on this page you could get wrong, because a thing that can be got wrong is no use whatsoever to a woman with a clothespin in her mouth.

Two clauses, and the second one names a side

There is a short psalm about keeping, and one line in it puts something in a specific place, and the place is the point.

The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.Psalm 121:5

Thy keeper. A keeper is not a rescuer. A rescuer arrives. A keeper is somebody whose job is ongoing, who is there in the hours when nothing is happening, and whose work is invisible precisely when it is working. Nobody notices being kept.

And then: thy shade upon thy right hand. Not overhead in general. Beside you, on a named side, at the distance a person stands from somebody they are with.

That is a position, not a promise about outcomes. The verse does not say the car will not come up the track. It says where He is standing when it does.

You are stood beside, right at your hand, and He was in position before the gate opened. That is not a comfort for a woman at a washing line: Psalm 121:5 makes Him the keeper and puts the shade at a named side rather than promising a quiet morning, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a position hold in a body that has already gone cold rather than the amount of steadiness anybody can find with a pin in their mouth.

What is actually available in the first ten seconds

Here is what makes this usable, and it is where a great deal of teaching on this subject fails.

If what God gives had to be reached for at the moment of impact, it would arrive too late every time. A woman who has just heard the wrong car at the wrong hour cannot pray properly, cannot go and find a verse, cannot compose herself, cannot do anything in a sequence. She has a wet sheet in her hands and her body has already decided.

So whatever is true has to be true without her, or it is not for this moment.

And that is exactly the shape of the psalm. He is thy keeper. Present tense, a fact about Him. She is not the subject of a single verb in the verse. There is nothing there for her to do and nothing for her to get wrong.

You are kept without having done anything since you heard the gravel. The written word makes the keeping His and the position already taken, and His Spirit is the one holding it over a real woman in a real yard, never a technique performed correctly under pressure.

So there is one line here, and it is not a formula. It does not fail if the words come out wrong or if only two of them arrive, because the words are not what is working. He is at my right hand. Or: the Lord is my keeper. Said out loud, in a yard, with the wind taking half of it. That is a person noticing out loud what is already the case, and noticing has never once been a spell.

You have not been left to hold yourself together for the length of a driveway. Scripture puts the keeper in position and the shade at a named side, and the Spirit of God has been standing exactly there through every time you have heard the wrong car.

The breakthrough

So nothing has to be reached for in this yard.

You are kept right now, mid sheet, with a pin still in your mouth. That is what stands written in Psalm 121:5, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one woman in one yard rather than true as a general statement about protection.

The cold that arrived a second and a half early has no right to stay the last word out here. The word puts a keeper in position and a shade at the right hand, and the Spirit of God does not require anybody to turn round first before He is standing where He is standing.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If mornings like this have been arriving often, or if any of it has taken you as far as thinking the place would be easier without you here, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will stand in a yard with you and not need the whole story. Do that first, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out in the yard, hand over your heart, sheet still on the line. There is nothing to work up to: this covering is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than reached for, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that went cold a second and a half early, never the steadiness anybody can find at a washing line. And whatever He does about what has come up that track, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Tires on the gravel at eleven in the morning, you did not arrive at an unkept woman. Psalm 121:5 says the Lord is my keeper, and keeping is a thing that was already going on out here before anybody turned in.
  2. Cold that got here before I did, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word puts the shade at my right hand and never once asks me to find it, so you have nothing to threaten a woman with in her own yard.
  3. Lord, You were standing at my hand before the car door went and You have not moved since. Scripture says the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand, and Your Spirit is why that is true with a pin in my mouth and a sheet half hung. I thank You, and my hand is over my heart right now and I am saying it out loud.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
