The Tray Was Still In My Hands

This message is for the ten seconds after somebody says one sentence to me while I am carrying something and cannot put it down

The glasses are still steaming and he is still walking and the sentence has already been said, and he has about four more steps.

A front room in the early evening, full of people. Somebody's coat has been put on a chair and somebody else has sat on it. The oldest woman in the room has the good seat and is holding court about a wedding from decades ago that gets better every year. Two children are conducting a serious negotiation under the table.

He is crossing the room with a tray. Six small glasses, the tea poured properly, the sugar already in for the ones who take it, and it is heavy in the particular way a tray is heavy, which is nothing to do with weight and everything to do with the fact that you cannot put your hands anywhere else.

And his cousin, not unkindly, not meaning anything at all, says one flat sentence to the room about a thing that is happening.

It lands on him.

Nobody notices. That is the strange part and it is always the strange part. The room carries on. The negotiation under the table enters a new phase. And a man in the middle of a carpet is in free fall with six glasses of tea in his hands and about four steps to go before he can put them down.

He puts the tray down. He puts it down properly, on the mat, without a sound. He straightens up.

The glasses go on steaming.

That is you, and your tray might be a steering wheel, or a keyboard, or a child on your hip, or a conversation you are in the middle of and cannot leave.

Before anything else. Nothing on this page is medical advice, and nothing here is going to tell you that what happens in your body when something lands is a spiritual condition. That is not mine to say and it would not be true. If this has been happening a lot, or if it has taken you somewhere darker, tell one person today who can act: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will come and sit down. And whatever landed on you mid carpet, it is not your cousin, who was saying an ordinary sentence to a room. Scripture is direct that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality.

And nothing here is a ritual. There is no sequence on this page you could get wrong, because the moment a thing can be got wrong it stops helping anybody who is in free fall on a carpet.

The tense in the first line of Psalm 91

There is a psalm that people reach for when something has landed, and the whole of what a man on a carpet needs is in the grammar of its opening line.

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.Psalm 91:1

Dwelleth. Not visits. Not runs to in an emergency. Dwells, which is a word for where a person already lives.

And shall abide under the shadow, which names a place already occupied, not a place anybody sprints to when something happens. A shadow is cast by whatever is above it. It does not have to be entered. Stand under the thing and the shade is already on you, and it was on you before the weather got noticed.

That is the whole point for the first ten seconds. Nothing has to be reached. There is no distance to cross while carrying a tray.

You are already under it, and you were under it before the sentence was said. That is not a soothing phrase for a man crossing a carpet: Psalm 91:1 puts the abiding in a place already occupied and never once describes a run for cover, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an already true thing true in a body in free fall rather than the amount of composure anybody can find with six glasses in their hands.

Ten seconds, and nothing to perform

Here is what makes this usable, and it is what most teaching on this subject gets wrong.

If the covering required something from you at the moment of impact, it would be useless at the moment of impact. That is not a small objection. A person with a tray in their hands cannot pray properly, cannot find a verse, cannot compose themselves, cannot get somewhere quiet, and cannot perform any sequence of anything. Whatever is true has to be true without them doing a single thing, or it is not for the first ten seconds at all.

And that is precisely how Scripture has it. The shadow is cast by the Almighty. The dwelling was established before the day started. Nothing in the verse is triggered by the reader.

You are covered without having done anything at all in the last ten seconds. The written word puts the abiding under a shadow that is already there, and His Spirit is the one making it hold on a real person in a real room, never a technique anybody performs correctly under pressure.

So there is one line here, and it is not a formula and it will not fail if you get the words wrong, because the words are not what is working. It is simply something true, said out loud, in a room with air in it: I am under this already. Or: the shadow was here first. Or the verse itself, if it comes. Any of it. None of it is doing the covering. It is a person noticing, out loud, what is already the case.

You have not been left to catch yourself, and the noticing is not what saves anybody. Scripture puts the covering above and the person under it, and the Spirit of God has held that arrangement in place through every sentence that ever landed on you across a room.

The breakthrough

So nothing has to be reached for in the next ten seconds.

You are covered right now, mid step, with the glasses still steaming. That is what stands written in Psalm 91:1, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one man on one carpet rather than true as a general promise about shelter.

The free fall has no right to stay the last word in this room. The word puts a shadow over the one who dwells and never asks them to run anywhere, and the Spirit of God does not wait for anybody to compose themselves before He covers them.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If sentences have been landing like this often, or if any of it has taken you as far as thinking the room would be easier without you in it, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit down with you and not need the whole story. Do that first, tonight, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these in the room, tray down, hand over your heart. There is nothing to work up to: this covering is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than reached for, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body in free fall, never the composure anybody can produce mid step. And whatever He does about the thing that was said, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Sentence that landed while my hands were full, you did not reach an uncovered man. Psalm 91:1 says he that dwelleth shall abide under the shadow, and the shadow was over this carpet before anybody opened their mouth.
  2. Free fall in the middle of a room, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word never once asks a person to run for cover, so you have no distance to make me cross and never did.
  3. Lord, You were over this room before I picked the tray up and You did not move when it landed. Scripture says the shadow of the Almighty, and Your Spirit is why that is true in ten seconds on a carpet with six glasses steaming. I thank You, and my hand is over my heart right now and I am saying it out loud.
