Keeping Score With A Fifteen Year Old

This message is for keeping score against my own fifteen year old daughter and being ahead, which is the worst part

She is sitting on the landing outside a closed door with a plate of toast that has gone cold, and she is ahead on points, and that is the part she cannot get past.

Twenty past nine. The house has the sound a house has when one person in it has gone quiet on purpose. Somewhere downstairs the dishwasher is on the cycle that clicks. There is a hoodie on the banister and a school bag with one strap on the floor by the top stair, and she has stepped over that bag four times tonight without moving it, which is itself a move.

The toast was a peace offering that she made slightly too late and slightly too pointedly, and it has been sitting on her knees long enough now that taking it in would be worse than not.

And what she is doing, sitting there, is the tally.

She said the thing about my job. I did not say the thing I could have said about her friend. She rolled her eyes at the table, twice. I stayed calm in front of her father, which she noticed. I have been reasonable seven times this week and she has been reasonable twice.

She is winning. Against a fifteen year old. Her own.

She knows exactly how that sounds. That is why she has never said any of it to anybody, including her husband, including the woman at work she tells almost everything to. It is not that she is proud of the tally. It is that the tally is running whether or not she authorizes it, and she cannot find the place where it turns off.

The toast is completely cold now. She takes it back down.

That is you, and your landing might be a kitchen, a car on the school run, a group chat, a marriage, an office where you have been quietly one up since about March.

Before anything else, and this comes first. If the person in your version of this frightens you, hurts you, or makes you pay for existing, nothing on this page is telling you to sit outside their door and absorb it. Standing has never once meant staying somewhere unsafe. Tell one person today who can act: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will come. Do that first. And if you are worried about your child in a way that has been keeping you awake, tell somebody who can help with that too, today, and let this page wait.

And second, plainly: nothing here is going to decide who was right at the table, is not going to send you through that door tonight, and is not going to promise you that she softens. It is going to take one person out of a position she was never supposed to be standing in.

The verse most people quote is the second half

There is a sentence about kindness that everybody has heard, and the part that does the work is the clause on the end that nobody finishes.

And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.Ephesians 4:32

Even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

Read the tense. Hath forgiven. Done. Finished. Before this evening started, before the thing at the table, before the seven reasonable and the two reasonable. There is no tally in front of God with your name at the top of it, and there is none with hers.

Which means the thing being asked of you is not a transaction. It is not: even up the score by being nicer than she has been. That would be one more move in a game, and the game is the actual problem.

What it says is that the whole apparatus of scoring has already been closed down somewhere else, and that closing is what makes it possible for a woman on a landing to stop running a tally against her own child.

You are not behind and you are not ahead, and there has been no scoreboard in front of God at any point this week. That is not a soothing line for a woman with cold toast on her knees: Ephesians 4:32 puts the forgiving in the perfect tense and settles it before the instruction arrives, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a settled thing settle in somebody whose tally has been running without permission rather than the amount of kindness anybody can produce at twenty past nine.

The tally is not malice, and she is not the opponent

Here is the mechanism, and naming it takes some of its power away.

Nobody decided to compete with a fifteen year old. There was no moment. What happened is that a series of ordinary evenings went slightly wrong, and a mother did what people do, which is protect herself, and protecting yourself requires something to protect against, and the only shape on that landing is a girl behind a door.

That is how a daughter becomes an opposing position. Not by malice. By repetition, in a house, over months.

And once she is in that slot, everything she does gets read from it. The eye roll. The one strap on the bag. Neither of those means what it now means, because a person standing in the position of an opponent has no neutral gestures left.

You have been reading your own daughter from a position she was never actually standing in. The written word says the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a person out of a slot they were put in by months of ordinary evenings, never a mother's ability to feel differently about her by breakfast.

And there is a second thing, and it may be the thing you came for. You are not your own enemy in this either. Nowhere does Scripture make a mother the fault line of her house for having kept a tally she never switched on, and His Spirit has not been withholding anything from that family until she gets the landing right.

The breakthrough

So nothing is being required of you on this step. No conversation tonight. No knock. No apology through a door.

You are sitting beside her and not opposite her, and that is true right now and stays true if she says nothing to you until Thursday. That is what stands written in Ephesians 4:32 and Ephesians 6:12, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one woman on one landing rather than true as a general observation about teenagers.

The scoreboard that has been running without your permission has no right to stay in this house. The word puts the forgiving in the perfect tense and never opens a ledger on anybody, and the Spirit of God does not wait for a mother and a daughter to sort out an evening before He moves a person out of the slot of the enemy.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If this stretch has taken you as far as thinking your family would have an easier run without you here, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit on a step with you and not need the whole story. Do that first, tonight, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these on the step with the plate still on your knees. Nothing needs working up: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than earned, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a tired mother, never the kindness anybody can produce at twenty past nine. And what He does between the two of you, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Tally I have been running all week, you are not a scoreboard God has ever kept. Ephesians 4:32 says He hath forgiven, in the perfect tense, and that was finished long before anything happened at the table tonight.
  2. Position I have been keeping my daughter in, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word takes flesh and blood off the list, so you have no claim on her and no right to the way I have been reading a fifteen year old.
  3. Lord, You have held the two of us together through every evening that ended like this one. Scripture says be kind, tenderhearted, forgiving, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you, and Your Spirit is the one who lifts a person out of a slot I put her in. I thank You, and I am saying her name out loud right now, once, and one true thing after it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
