Two Brothers And One Till

This message is for a year of speaking to my own brother about nothing except stock and change, standing three feet from him every day

They pass each other four times between nine and quarter past, and every word said in that fifteen minutes is about the shop.

Closing. The shutter is half down, which is the signal to the street that the door is technically still open and please do not. One of them is at the till doing the float. The other one is stacking crates by the back, breaking down cardboard, moving a pallet that does not need moving.

"Have we got the small cans."

"Two boxes. Behind the milk."

"Right."

That is it. That is the entire content of a relationship between two men who shared a room until they were nineteen, who buried their father together six years ago, who have keys to each other's houses.

A year of this. Not a row. There was no row. If there had been a row there would be something to point at, and one of them could apologize, and it would be a story with an event in it. There was a conversation about the lease that went slightly wrong in a way neither of them can now reconstruct, and then a week of being careful, and then careful became normal, and then normal became a year.

Twelve months of standing three feet from your own brother and talking about cans.

He puts the float in the safe. His brother says something about the delivery Thursday. He says something back. They both go home.

That is you, and your shop might be a kitchen, a car, a landing, a Sunday lunch, a marriage where all the remaining conversation is logistics.

Now, before anything else, and this comes first because nothing else on this page matters more. If the person in your version of this frightens you, hurts you, or makes you pay for existing, none of what follows is telling you to stay in the room with them. Standing has never once meant staying somewhere unsafe. Tell one person today who can act: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will come. Put this down and do that first. It will keep.

And second, said gently and meant exactly: this article is not going to tell you who was right about the lease, is not going to require you to have a conversation, and is not going to promise you that anything between you changes. What it is going to do is take one person out of a position they were never supposed to be standing in.

The verse that moves the enemy

There is one sentence that this whole site rests on, and it is not gentle and it is not vague.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.Ephesians 6:12

Read the first six words on their own. We wrestle not against flesh and blood.

Flesh and blood is a phrase for people. Actual human beings, with faces and habits and a way of stacking crates that annoys you. And the sentence says: not them. Not the one across the shop. Not the one who said the thing about the lease.

Now, I am going to be careful about the second half of that verse, because this is where a great deal of harm gets done and I am not going to do any of it here.

The second half tells you the enemy is not human. It does not hand you a map. It does not give you a method, a diagnosis, a name to say, a procedure to perform over a building or a person. Nothing on this page is a technique, and anything you could get right or wrong is not from God, because the moment a thing can be got wrong the whole weight of the outcome slides onto the person doing it. Paul's point in that sentence is not that you now have work to do somewhere else. His point, in a passage where the verb is stand four times in six verses, is that the person in front of you is not the opponent and never was.

You are not fighting your brother, and you never have been, however the last twelve months have felt. That is not sentiment across a counter: Ephesians 6:12 takes flesh and blood off the list in plain words, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a relocated thing stay relocated in a man who has spent a year being careful rather than the amount of goodwill anybody can summon at closing time.

What a year of careful actually did

Here is the mechanism, and naming it takes some of the power out of it.

Nobody decided he was the enemy. There was no moment. What happened is that a small thing went wrong, and both of them protected themselves the way people do, and the protecting required a shape to protect against, and the only shape available was the other man.

That is how an ordinary brother becomes an opposing position. Not by malice. By repetition, and by a hundred small self-protections that each made sense on the day.

And once he is in that position, everything he does gets read from it. The way he says right. The pallet he moves that does not need moving. Neither of those means anything, and both of them mean something now, because a man in the position of an opponent has no neutral actions left.

You have been reading a man from a position he was never actually standing in. The written word says the wrestling is not against flesh and blood, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a person back out of a slot they were put in by a year of careful, never the reader's ability to feel differently about them by Thursday.

Nobody is being asked to decide who was right. That question is not on this page, it is not answerable from where you sit, and it has never once been what is actually wrong between you.

You are free to stop needing the verdict, and the verdict was never what you were missing. Scripture puts the opponent somewhere that is not a person, and His Spirit is what makes that land in a body rather than being a thing a man agrees with and then goes back to the shop.

The breakthrough

So nothing is being required of you at this counter. No conversation. No apology. No decision about who was right about a lease.

You are standing beside him and not opposite him, and that was true before you read this and will be true if he never changes at all. That is what stands written in Ephesians 6:12, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one man in one shop rather than true as a general position about human conflict.

The slot your brother has been standing in for a year has no right to stay in this shop any longer. The word says the wrestling is not against flesh and blood, and the Spirit of God does not wait for two men to sort it out before He takes a person out of the position of the enemy.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If this year has taken you as far as thinking the shop and the family would go easier without you here, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit down with you and not need the whole story. Do that first, tonight, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the shutter down. Nothing needs working up: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than earned, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a tired man, never the goodwill anybody can find at closing time. And what He does between the two of you, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Year of nothing but stock and change, you are not proof that my brother is against me. Ephesians 6:12 says we wrestle not against flesh and blood, and that was true on every one of the days I could not see it.
  2. Position I have been keeping him in, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word never put a man's own brother on that list, so you have no claim on him and no right to the way I read him.
  3. Lord, You have held the two of us together through twelve months of careful. Scripture says the wrestling is not against flesh and blood, and Your Spirit is what takes a person out of a slot I put them in. I thank You, and I am saying his name out loud right now, once, and one true thing after it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
