We Used To Sit Together

This message is for a friendship of twelve years that ended over a schedule, and the fact that I still take the long way round the hall to avoid her

She goes the long way around the hall, past the stacked tables and the door that sticks, and it adds about eleven seconds, and she has been adding those eleven seconds for two years.

Thursday afternoon. The hall smells of the floor polish they use and of the urn, which has been on since one o'clock and will be on until five. Somebody has put the chairs out in the wrong configuration again and nobody is going to say anything about it. Light through the high windows in that dusty diagonal.

At the table near the kitchen hatch, a woman is folding programs. She is quick at it. She has always been quick at it.

Twelve years they sat together. Twelve years of the same two chairs, third row, on the left, and of a friendship that ran through hospital appointments and a divorce and one genuinely serious winter. She knows how this woman takes tea. She knows the name of her first dog.

And then there was a schedule.

Not a betrayal. Not a lie. Not one single thing anybody could write down. A schedule, and two people who both thought they had been clear, and a Thursday where one of them came in and found it had been done differently, and then a conversation in a corridor that lasted about four minutes and that neither of them has ever mentioned since.

Two years. Eleven seconds each way. Nobody in this hall knows.

She goes past the stacked tables. She does not look over. The woman folding programs does not look up, and has not looked up, and both of them have been not looking for so long now that it has stopped being a decision and become a piece of choreography.

That is you, and your long way round might be a corridor at work, a street in your own town, a service you go to at a different time now, a family gathering you arrive late to on purpose.

Before anything else, and this comes first. If the person in your version of this frightens you, hurts you, or makes you pay for existing, nothing on this page is telling you to walk back over there. Standing has never once meant staying somewhere unsafe, and there are situations where the long way round is wisdom and not avoidance. Tell one person today who can act: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will come. Do that first.

And second, plainly: nothing here is going to establish who was clear about the schedule, is not going to send you over to that table this afternoon, and is not going to promise you that the friendship comes back. It is going to take one woman out of a position she was never supposed to be standing in.

Paul says pursue, and he says what to pursue

There is a short line at the end of a long argument about people disagreeing over practical matters, and it is written for exactly this hall.

Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.Romans 14:19

Follow after is a strong verb. Chase. Pursue. Go after the way you go after something that is getting away.

And notice what he does not say, because the whole of Romans 14 is the context here. He has just spent a chapter on people who disagree about practical arrangements, and he never once tells them who is right. He does not adjudicate. He does not issue a ruling on the days or the food, and he explicitly refuses to let either side despise the other.

What he does is redirect the chasing. Not: pursue being right. Pursue what makes for peace, and pursue what builds another person up.

Which means the two years have been spent chasing something. Every one of those eleven second detours is a pursuit. It is effort, sustained, twice a Thursday, for two years, in a direction.

You are able to chase something else now, and you do not have to be found right first. That is not a soft word for a woman near a kitchen hatch: Romans 14:19 refuses to adjudicate the disagreement and redirects the pursuit instead, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a redirected thing stay redirected in somebody who has been walking eleven seconds out of her way rather than the amount of goodwill anybody can produce beside an urn.

A schedule is not a person

Here is the mechanism, and naming it out loud takes some of its power away.

There was a four minute conversation in a corridor. That is the whole of the evidence, and both women could recite it. And then two years of interpretation, and every interpretation was consistent with the four minutes, because interpretation always is consistent with the thing it started from.

That is how a friend of twelve years becomes an opposing position. Not by malice. By a disagreement neither of them knew how to end, and by a body that started taking a different route before anybody consciously decided anything.

And once she is in that slot, everything she does gets read from it. She did not look up. She is quick at folding. Neither of those means anything at all, and both of them mean something now, because a woman standing in the position of an opponent has no neutral movements left.

You have been reading a woman you love out of four minutes in a corridor, and she has been standing in a position she was never actually standing in. The written word takes flesh and blood off the list of what anybody wrestles, and the Spirit of God is the one who lifts a person out of a slot two years of choreography built, never a friend's ability to feel differently about her by the end of the afternoon.

Nobody is asking you to decide that you were unclear about the schedule. That question is real and it is not the thing that has been wrong in this hall, and it has never once been the thing that has been wrong in this hall.

You are free to stop needing to be found right, and twelve years is not erased by a Thursday. Scripture puts the opponent somewhere that is not a person, and His Spirit is what makes that land in a body rather than being a thing a woman agrees with and then walks the long way anyway.

The breakthrough

So nothing is being required of you this afternoon. No walk across. No conversation by the hatch. No decision about who was clear.

You are standing beside her and not opposite her, and that is true right now and stays true if she never looks up at all. That is what stands written in Romans 14:19 and Ephesians 6:12, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one woman in one hall rather than true as a general remark about fallen out friendships.

The position your friend has been standing in for two years has no right to stay in this hall any longer. The word redirects the pursuit and refuses to rule on the disagreement, and the Spirit of God does not wait for two women to settle a schedule before He moves a person out of the slot of the enemy.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If these two years have taken you as far as thinking this place, or your family, would run more smoothly without you here, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit down beside you and not need the whole story. Do that first, today, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these before Thursday comes round again. Nothing needs working up: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than earned, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that has been taking the long way for two years, never the goodwill anybody can find beside an urn. And what He does between the two of you, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Four minutes in a corridor, you are not twelve years and you never were. Romans 14:19 tells me what to chase and never once tells me to be found right first.
  2. Position I have been keeping my friend in, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word takes flesh and blood off the list, so you have no claim on her and no right to what I read into a woman folding programs.
  3. Lord, You have held the two of us in this hall through two years of choreography neither of us chose. Scripture says follow after the things which make for peace, and Your Spirit is the one who lifts a person out of a slot I put her in. I thank You, and I am saying her name out loud right now, once, and one true thing after it.
