Across The Table At Every Lunch

This message is for eleven years of Sunday lunches sat directly opposite a man I have decided is against me, passing him the bread every single week

The bread goes across the table and neither of them looks up, and this is the eleventh year of it.

Sunday. The long table, the one that lives in two halves and gets put together with a leaf that nobody can ever find first go. Somebody's baby in a high chair at the corner being fed olives by an aunt who will deny it. Three conversations happening at once and a fourth one that is only two people at the far end and is definitely about a car.

He is on one side. His father in law is directly opposite. It has been that arrangement for eleven years, and nobody assigned it, and nobody would now be able to change it without everybody in the room noticing.

The basket comes to him. He takes a piece. He passes it across.

"Thanks."

"Right you are."

That is the transaction. It is completely correct. There has never been a scene, never a raised voice, never anything anybody outside this family would recognize as a problem. There was one afternoon in the second year, about a job, that lasted maybe ninety seconds, and neither man has referred to it since, and both men could give you the exact words.

Eleven years of passing bread to a man he has decided is against him.

And here is the thing that is genuinely strange about it, and that he has thought about more than once: he cannot actually produce any evidence. If you sat him down and asked what the man has done, he would have the ninety seconds, and then he would have a lot of things that are about tone.

He passes the bread. Somebody asks him to pass the water. He passes the water.

That is you, and your table might be a boardroom, a schedule, a kitchen, a family group where you have had somebody in a particular position since about the second year.

Before anything else, and this comes first. If the person in your version of this frightens you, hurts you, or makes you pay for existing, nothing on this page is telling you to keep sitting at that table. Standing has never once meant staying somewhere unsafe. Tell one person today who can act: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will come. Do that first.

And second, plainly: nothing here is going to settle the ninety seconds, is not going to send you into a conversation over the roast, and is not going to promise you that he warms up. It is going to take one man out of a position he was never supposed to be standing in.

Four verbs, and every one of them faces the same way

There is a line in the love chapter that gets read at weddings in a soft voice and is actually the hardest working sentence in it.

Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.1 Corinthians 13:7

Four verbs. Look at the second one, because that is the one for a man at a table.

Believeth all things. It does not mean love is gullible. It means love does not fill in the blanks against a person. When there is a gap in the evidence, and there is almost always a gap, love does not automatically supply the worst reading of the gap.

Which is precisely what eleven years of tone has been. A gap in the evidence, filled in the same direction, week after week, until the filling in stopped feeling like a choice and started feeling like knowledge.

And note where all four verbs point. They point at what the person doing the loving does, in themselves, without any cooperation from the other side. Not one of these four requires the other man to do anything at all. Bearing, believing, hoping, enduring: every one of them happens on your side of that table.

You are able to stop filling in the gaps against him, and it does not require one word from him. That is not sentiment at a Sunday lunch: 1 Corinthians 13:7 puts all four verbs on the side of the one loving, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a relocated thing stay relocated in a man who has been reading tone for eleven years rather than the amount of generosity anybody can find while passing a basket.

Ninety seconds is not a man

Here is the mechanism, and naming it out loud takes something out of it.

Ninety seconds happened in the second year. That is real and it is not nothing. And then a decade of reading, and every reading was consistent with the ninety seconds, because a reading always is consistent with the thing it started from.

That is how a father in law becomes an opposing position. Not by a campaign. By one bad ninety seconds and a decade of interpretation with no fresh evidence and no way for any to arrive, because a man in that slot has no neutral gestures left. Right you are is now a comment. The way he holds a glass is now a comment.

You have been reading a whole man out of a minute and a half, and he has been standing in a position he was never actually standing in. The written word says the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and the Spirit of God is the one who lifts a person out of a slot a decade put them in, never a son in law's ability to feel differently about him between courses.

And nobody here is asking you to decide that the ninety seconds did not matter. It did. It is not the question on this page and it never was the thing that has been wrong at that table.

You are free to stop needing to be right about him, and nothing you actually experienced is being taken from you. Scripture puts the opponent somewhere that is not a person, and His Spirit is what makes that land in a body rather than being a thing a man agrees with and then passes the water.

The breakthrough

So nothing is being required of you at this table. No conversation over the roast. No apology for the ninety seconds. No decision about who was right about a job in the second year.

You are sitting on the same side as him and not opposite him, and that is true right now and stays true if he says exactly what he always says. That is what stands written in 1 Corinthians 13:7 and Ephesians 6:12, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one man passing a basket rather than true as a general observation about in-laws.

The position that man has been standing in since the second year has no right to stay at this table any longer. The word takes flesh and blood off the list, and the Spirit of God does not wait for two men to reopen a ninety second conversation before He moves a person out of the slot of the enemy.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If the years of this have taken you as far as thinking these lunches would go better without you at them, or that the family would, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit down with you and not need the whole story. Do that first, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these before you go back in. Nothing needs working up: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than earned, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that has been reading tone for a decade, never the generosity anybody can find at a Sunday table. And what He does between the two of you, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Ninety seconds in the second year, you are not a man and you never were. 1 Corinthians 13:7 says love believeth all things, and it never once asked me to fill a gap in against somebody.
  2. Position I have been keeping him in for eleven years, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word takes flesh and blood off the list, so you have no claim on him and no right to the way I read a glass being put down.
  3. Lord, You have held this family together through eleven years of me passing bread to a man I had already decided about. Scripture says beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things, and Your Spirit is the one who lifts a person out of a slot I put him in. I thank You, and I am saying his name out loud right now, once, and one true thing after it.
