The Lord FightsIsaiah 43:2

Nine O Clock Every Night From Here

This message is for calling my mother every night at nine from five thousand miles away to make sure she locked the door, because I think my voice is what keeps her safe

One minute to nine and the phone is already ringing, because he starts dialing at fifty nine past so the call connects on the hour.

He is out on the balcony because the apartment is too warm and because out here he can hear better. Four floors up, the city doing the thing cities do at nine, somebody's television through a wall, a scooter, a woman calling a child in two words that mean the same thing in every language. The washing on the rack has been dry since four and he has not brought it in.

She picks up on the second ring. She always does. She is sitting where she always sits.

And then the list, which he does not think of as a list, and which she does not think of as a list, and which has been the same list for eleven years.

The front door. The back door. The gas at the wall. The window in the kitchen, the small one, that does not look like it opens and does. Her tablets. Whether she has eaten something that was not just bread.

She answers every one. Sometimes she laughs at him. Sometimes she is short with him because she is seventy nine and she has been locking her own doors since before he existed. He does not stop asking.

Five thousand miles. Nine years since he moved. Eleven years since his father died, which is when the calls started, which is not a coincidence and which nobody in the family has ever said out loud.

Here is what he has never told anybody, including her, including his wife: he believes the calls are what is keeping her alive. Not consciously. Not as a doctrine. But if he misses a night, and once in a while a night gets missed, something in his chest goes cold and stays cold until the next evening, and he cannot work, and he is not fully in the room with his own children.

He says goodnight. He brings the washing in. He does it all again tomorrow at fifty nine past eight.

That is you, and your nine o'clock might be a text you send, a light you check, a name you say to God every night in the same order because the one night you skipped a name you could not settle.

Two plain things before anything else. If your version of this includes somebody frightening you or hurting you, nothing on this page is telling you to keep the arrangement and absorb it; tell one person today who can act, your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will come and sit down. And whatever this is, it is not a person. Not the sibling who lives close and does less. Not your mother. Scripture is direct that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality, because it means you can stop losing to somebody you also love.

What God promises and what He carefully does not

There is a verse people give each other in hard seasons, and almost everybody hears it slightly wrong, and hearing it right is what a man on a balcony needs.

When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.Isaiah 43:2

Read the prepositions, because the prepositions are the promise.

Through the waters. Through the rivers. Through the fire. Not around. Not instead of. He does not say there will be no water. He says the water is not the last word about the person walking in it, and He says who is going to be in there with them.

And then read who is doing the work in every clause. I will be with thee. They shall not overflow thee. Thou shalt not be burned. There is not one instruction in the verse. Nothing is asked. It is entirely a description of what He is doing, given to somebody who is already in the water.

You are not what is keeping your mother in the land of the living, and God has never once run her safety through your phone. That is not an easy thing to hand a son on a balcony: Isaiah 43:2 puts every verb of protection on God and none on the one being protected, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a released thing stay released in a chest that has gone cold for eleven years rather than the amount of consistency anybody can keep across five thousand miles.

Missing a night is not abandoning her

Now the fear under the fear, and it deserves to be said straight.

The fear is that the day he stops calling is the day he becomes the son who went away and let it happen. That the nine o'clock is love, and that easing off it is the withdrawal of love, and that if anything ever does happen to her he will know exactly which evening he was not diligent.

That is not how any of it works, and Scripture does not treat it that way anywhere.

Handing something back to God is not walking away from it. He does not stop being her son on the night he calls at ten instead. He stops being her guarantor, which is a post nobody in that family appointed him to, that he took on the year his father died out of love and terror at the same time, and that he has held with no relief since.

You were never the last thing standing between the people you love and disaster, and God did not put you in that position. The written word puts every protecting verb on Him, and the Spirit of God is the one carrying what a son is not built to carry across an ocean, never the son's stamina.

Let me be exact about the thing that matters most on this page, because somebody has been carrying it in silence for years. Whatever comes to your mother, whenever it comes, it will not be a report on how faithfully you called. If a hard night arrives, it will not have arrived because you were asleep. Nobody buys somebody else's safety with vigilance and nobody forfeits it by resting. That arithmetic does not exist anywhere in Scripture, and where it has been implied to you it was implied wrongly.

You have not been sitting an examination that God has been marking at nine o'clock for eleven years. The word describes His own action with no conditions attached to it, and His Spirit has been in that room with her every single night, including the ones you missed.

Keep calling, by the way. The calls are good. She likes them, even when she is short with you. What comes off is not the call, it is the weight underneath the call.

The breakthrough

So nothing gets taken off you out here on this balcony.

You are free to miss a night, and she is already His, and she has been His through all eleven years of nine o'clocks. That is what stands written in Isaiah 43:2, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one man four floors up rather than true as a general fact about God that never reaches an ocean away.

The cold that arrives in your chest on a missed night has no right to stay in it. The word never once made a man responsible for keeping his mother alive, and the Spirit of God has not been waiting on anybody's phone before He is in a room.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If eleven years of this have taken you as far as thinking your own family here would have an easier time without you, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will stand on a balcony with you and not need it explained. Do that first, tonight, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with the city going on underneath you. Nothing needs working up: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than earned, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a chest that has been cold for years, never the consistency anybody can keep at five thousand miles. And what He does about your mother, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Nine o'clock every night from here, you are not what is keeping my mother alive. Isaiah 43:2 puts every verb of protection on God, and He has been in that house on the nights I called and the nights I did not.
  2. Cold that arrives in my chest when a night gets missed, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word never made a son anybody's guarantor, so you have no evening left to punish me with.
  3. Lord, You have been with her through water and through fire while I stood on a balcony believing it was my voice. Scripture says when thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee, and Your Spirit has been in that room every single night. I thank You, and I am opening my hands right here and saying out loud, once, who holds her.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
