He stands up, and the room turns toward him before he has decided what he is going to say, and he notices that this year for the first time.
A long table under a roof that is open at both ends, so the air moves through and the light comes in sideways at this hour and lies along the wood. Plates pushed back. Somebody's baby asleep against a shoulder. Two of the aunties at the far end who have been talking quietly the whole meal and will keep talking through whatever he says, and that is not rudeness, it is how it has always been.
Seven years he has done this. Since the year his uncle stopped coming, which was the year everything about who speaks got quietly rearranged and nobody rearranged it out loud.
He does the land. He does the arrangement with the family down the road. He does the thing about the access track, which has been the thing about the access track for a decade. He is good at it. He is calm and he is fair and he does not raise his voice, and afterward people say the right things to him at the edge of the room while they are putting chairs away.
And what he is thinking, standing up with the room already turned, is this:
I cannot hear myself anymore.
Not the volume. The other thing. He does not know what he thinks about the access track. He knows what needs saying about it. He has known what needs saying about everything for seven years, and somewhere in there the part of him that had opinions of its own got folded up and put away to make room, and he has only just noticed the space where it used to be.
He speaks. It goes well. It always goes well.
That is you, and your long table might be a meeting, a ward round, a family group chat, a marriage where you have been the reasonable one for so long that you could not now tell somebody what you actually want.
Two plain things before anything else. If your version of this includes somebody frightening you or hurting you, nothing on this page is telling you to keep speaking for everybody and absorbing it; tell one person today who can act, your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will come and sit down. And whatever this is, it is not a person. Not the uncle who stopped coming. Not the family down the road. Scripture is direct that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality, because it means you can stop losing to somebody you also love.
Nehemiah puts something down in the middle of the work
There is a sentence in the middle of a rebuilding project, said to people who were working with one hand and watching with the other, and it settles who is doing what.
In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.Nehemiah 4:20
Notice the shape of the arrangement. The people build. The people gather when they hear the sound. And then there is one more clause and it belongs to somebody else entirely: our God shall fight for us.
They are not told to fight and be helped. They are told to come together, and to know who the fighting belongs to. The building is theirs. The gathering is theirs. The fighting is His.
That is a distribution, and it is a merciful one, and most of us have quietly collapsed it into a single job and then carried the whole of it.
You are doing your part and you have never been doing His, whatever the last seven years have made you believe. That is not a soothing line for a man standing at the head of a table: Nehemiah 4:20 divides the work and reserves the fighting for God in one plain clause, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a released thing stay released in a body that has been the voice for seven years rather than the amount of steadiness anybody can produce with a room already turned toward them.
Speaking for everybody is not the same as carrying everybody
Here is the thing underneath, and it should be said out loud rather than walked past.
Somewhere in seven years, the speaking and the carrying became one act. He stood up to say what needed saying, and because he was the one saying it, he became the one it depended on, and because he was the one it depended on, he stopped being able to afford an opinion of his own, because an opinion is a risk and he could no longer afford risk on behalf of everybody.
That is what happens to the voice. It does not get shouted down. It gets crowded out by responsibility.
And Scripture does not ask that of anybody. Nehemiah's builders were not asked to become the outcome. They were asked to build, to gather, and to know who fights.
You were never the last thing standing between these people and disaster, and God did not put you at the head of that table to be their guarantor. The written word divides the work and keeps the fighting for Himself, and the Spirit of God is the one carrying what a man is not built to carry, never the man's stamina.
Let me be exact about the thing that matters most on this page. Nothing about these seven years is a report on how well you spoke. If the access track never gets settled, it will not be because you said it wrong in a year when you were tired. Nobody wins an outcome with eloquence and nobody forfeits one by having nothing to say. That arithmetic is not in Scripture, and where it has been implied to you it was implied wrongly.
You have not been sitting an examination that God has been marking at every family meeting since your uncle stopped coming. The word gives the fighting to God in a clause with no conditions attached, and His Spirit has been holding this family through seven years of you doing the talking.
So nothing gets taken off you at this table by pressure.
You are free to have an opinion again, and this family is already His, and they have been His through all seven years of you doing the talking. That is what stands written in Nehemiah 4:20, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one man at the head of one table rather than true as a general fact about God that never reaches the access track.
The belief that everything holds because you are the one who stands up has no right to stay under this roof. The word divides the work and keeps the fighting, and the Spirit of God has not been waiting on anybody's steadiness before He acts on a family.
One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If seven years of this have taken you as far as thinking the family would do better with somebody else at the head of the table, or without you here at all, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit down at the other end of the table and let it be quiet. Do that first, before anything else on this page.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing at the table if that is where this finds you. Nothing needs working up: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than earned, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that has been the voice for seven years, never the steadiness anybody can produce on demand. And what He does about the land and the track and this family, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.
- Long table with the room already turned, you are not what has been holding this family together. Nehemiah 4:20 says our God shall fight for us, and He has been fighting through every meeting I stood up in.
- Weight that says an opinion of my own is a risk I cannot afford, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word divides the work and keeps the fighting for God, so you have never once had a family to hold over me.
- Lord, You have held these people through seven years I spent believing my voice was the thing holding them. Scripture says our God shall fight for us, and Your Spirit has carried what I was never built to carry. I thank You, and I am opening my hands right here at this table and saying out loud, once, who holds them.
