The Lord FightsPsalm 46:10

The One Who Manages Everyone

This message is for nine years of quietly managing everybody's feelings in this family so that nothing goes wrong, and the exhaustion of never being off duty

She has two coats over her arm and nobody has arrived yet, and she is already three moves ahead of a conversation that has not happened.

The hallway is narrow and the radiator is on and there is that smell a house gets when something has been in the oven for two hours. Her own coat is still on. She came in with the shopping, put it down, picked up two coats from the newel post because they should not be there when people come, and has been standing here for about ninety seconds without moving.

She is doing the seating.

Not the table. The room. Who goes near whom. Which of them ends up next to which, and what topic that puts within reach, and who will say the thing they always say, and who will go quiet, and how long she will have before she needs to get up and do something in the kitchen so that the silence has a reason.

Nine years of this. It started with one Christmas that went badly, and by the following spring she had become the person who makes sure it does not happen again, and nobody voted, and nobody thanked her, because a thing that works invisibly does not look like work.

She is exhausted in a way that sleep does not fix. She has not been off duty in nine years. There is no version of a family gathering in which she is a person at it.

The doorbell goes. She hangs the coats. She is entirely ready and she has not sat down since Tuesday.

That is you, and your hallway might be a workplace, a group chat, a marriage, a small church, a shift where you are the one who notices when somebody is about to go under.

Two plain things before anything else. If your version of this includes somebody frightening you or hurting you, nothing on this page is telling you to keep managing it and absorbing it; tell one person today who can act, your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will come and sit down. And whatever this is, it is not a person. Not the one who always says the thing. Not the one who goes quiet. Scripture is direct that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality, because it means you can stop losing to somebody you also love.

Be still, and what it actually means

There is a line everybody has seen on a wall, and it is almost always read as a sedative when it is in fact an instruction to stand down.

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.Psalm 46:10

Be still. The word underneath it is not about calm feelings. It is closer to: let go, drop it, cease from what your hands are doing. It is said in a psalm where the earth is being removed and the mountains are going into the sea and the nations are making a noise, which is to say it is not addressed to people in a peaceful room. It is addressed to people in the middle of it.

And the reason given is not that things are fine. The reason is a Person. Know that I am God. Stand down because there is somebody else in the room whose job this actually is.

You are allowed to stop managing this, and nothing is being held together by you. That is not a gentle thought for a woman in a hallway with two coats over her arm: Psalm 46:10 tells people in the middle of an upheaval to cease and gives them a Person rather than a technique, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a released thing stay released in a body that has not been off duty in nine years rather than the amount of stillness anybody can manufacture before a doorbell goes.

Notice what it does not say. It does not say be still and then things will be pleasant. It does not promise that the meal goes well. It removes the assignment without guaranteeing the outcome, which is a harder gift than the wall version and a much more useful one.

Stopping is not the same as stopping caring

Here is the fear underneath, and it should be said out loud rather than tiptoed around.

The fear is that if she stops managing, the thing she has been preventing for nine years will finally happen, and it will happen because she stopped. That the exhaustion is the price of everybody being all right. That love and vigilance are one substance and setting down the second one sets down the first.

They are not one substance and Scripture does not treat them as one.

Handing something back to God is not detachment from it. She does not stop being the person who loves this family on the afternoon she sits down at her own table. She stops being the guarantor of the atmosphere, which is a post nobody appointed her to, which she took on after one bad Christmas out of love and dread together, and which she has held with no relief for nearly a decade.

You were never the last thing standing between these people and disaster, and God did not put you in that position. The written word says be still and know, and the Spirit of God is the one carrying what a person is not built to carry, never the person's stamina.

Let me be exact about the thing that matters most on this page, because somebody has quietly been carrying it for years. Nothing that happens in that room today is a report on how well you managed it. If it goes badly, it will not have gone badly because you sat down. Nobody buys peace in a family with vigilance and nobody forfeits it by resting. That arithmetic is not anywhere in Scripture, and where it has been implied to you it was implied wrongly.

You have not been sitting an examination that God has been marking for nine years. The word says cease, plainly, in a sentence with no conditions attached, and His Spirit has been holding this family through every gathering you thought you were holding.

The breakthrough

So nothing gets pulled out of your arms in this hallway.

You are free to sit down, and this family is already His, and they were His at every gathering of the nine years. That is what stands written in Psalm 46:10, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one woman in one narrow hall rather than true as a general fact about God that never reaches the seating plan.

The belief that the peace in that room is your achievement has no right to stay in this house. The word tells people in an upheaval to cease and names God as the reason, and the Spirit of God has not been waiting on anybody's arranging before He holds a household.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If nine years of this have taken you as far as thinking the family would run more easily without you here, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit in your kitchen and not need it explained. Do that first, today, before the doorbell and before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with your own coat still on. Nothing needs working up: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than earned, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that has not been off duty since a bad Christmas, never the calm anybody can manufacture. And what He does about this afternoon and this family, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Narrow hallway with the coats in my arms, you are not the place where this family is held together. Psalm 46:10 says be still and know that He is God, and that was said into an upheaval and not into a quiet room.
  2. Dread that says it all comes apart the day I sit down, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word tells people in the middle of it to cease, so you have never once had an afternoon to hold over me.
  3. Lord, You have held these people through nine years of gatherings I thought I was holding. Scripture says be still, and know, and Your Spirit has carried what I was never built to carry. I thank You, and I am opening my hands right here in this hallway and saying out loud, once, who holds them.
