Eleven at night and she is on her knees in the hallway going through the tabs again, and they are already in order, and she knows they are already in order.
The crate is gray plastic with a lid that does not properly fit anymore because it has been on and off so many times. It lives by the front door. Not in a cupboard, not in the room she calls the office and is actually a corner of the landing. By the door, where she can pick it up on the way out, which is a decision she made in year one and has never revisited.
Everything about her son is in it, in date order. The first assessment. The one that contradicted the first assessment. Letters from three different people who each thought they were the only person she was writing to. A page she wrote out by hand in the car outside a meeting because her phone had died and she needed to remember the exact words somebody used.
The meeting is at nine tomorrow. She has been to fourteen of these.
She checks the tabs. She straightens the ones that do not need straightening. She sits back on her heels in the hallway with the light off in the rest of the house and she has one of those thoughts that arrive with the whole thing already assembled:
I cannot remember the last time I was anything to him except this.
Not his mother. His advocate. His caseworker. The one who knows the reference numbers. Four years ago she was a woman who took him swimming and now she is a woman who takes minutes, and somewhere in there the swimming stopped and nobody announced it.
And underneath that, the harder one, the one she does not go near very often: if I am not on this, nobody is, and everything that has not gone wrong has not gone wrong because I have been on it.
She puts the lid on. It does not quite fit. She leaves it by the door.
That is you, and your crate might be a folder on a phone, or a shared drive, or a diary, or a mind that has not gone properly quiet since a Tuesday four years ago.
Two plain things before anything else. If your version of this includes somebody frightening you or hurting you, nothing on this page is telling you to stay in it and absorb it; tell one person today who can act, your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will come and sit down. And whatever this is, it is not a person. Not the ones across the table at those meetings. Not the ones who never helped. Scripture is direct that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality, because it means you can stop losing to somebody you also love.
A boy says who the fight belongs to, out loud, in front of everybody
There is a sentence spoken by somebody young and badly equipped, in front of an entire assembly, and it says who owns the thing.
And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's.1 Samuel 17:47
The verse goes on to speak about that day and that outcome, and that part belongs to that day. What belongs to every day is the middle of it.
The LORD saveth not with sword and spear. Which is to say: the saving does not run on equipment. It does not run on preparation, on the quality of the file, on whether the tabs are in order, on whether somebody got the right person on the phone in March. Those things can be good and worth doing. They are simply not what the outcome is resting on, and they never were.
For the battle is the LORD's. It has an owner. The owner is named. The owner is not the woman in the hallway.
You have not been what is holding your son's life together, and it has never rested on the crate. That is not a gentle thing to say to a woman on her knees at eleven at night: 1 Samuel 17:47 takes the saving off the equipment and gives the battle an owner in plain words, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a released thing stay released in a body braced for four years rather than the amount of preparation anybody can do before a nine o'clock meeting.
Putting it down is not the same as letting him down
Here is the fear underneath and it should be said straight out.
The fear is that easing off means loving him less. That the day the crate stops living by the door is the day she becomes the mother who stopped fighting for him. Four years have welded the loving and the carrying together so completely that there is no seam left.
They are not one thing and Scripture does not treat them as one.
Handing something back to God is not withdrawal from it. She does not stop being his mother when she stops being his guarantor, and guarantor is a post nobody appointed her to, that she took on in year one out of love and terror in equal measure, and that she has held without relief ever since.
You were never the last thing standing between your son and disaster, and God did not place you in that position. The written word says the battle belongs to the Lord and the saving does not run on equipment, and the Spirit of God is the one carrying what a mother is not built to carry, never the mother's stamina.
And let me be exact about the thing that matters more than anything else here. Nothing about these four years is a report on how hard you fought. If something has gone badly, it did not go badly because you missed a form. Nobody buys an outcome by preparing better and nobody forfeits one by resting. That arithmetic is not anywhere in Scripture, and where it has been implied to you, in a room, by somebody with a lanyard or somebody with a Bible, it was implied wrongly.
You have not been sitting an examination that God has been marking for four years. The word puts the battle in His hands in a sentence with no conditions attached, and His Spirit has been holding your son through every one of the fourteen meetings.
So nothing gets pulled out of your hands in this hallway.
You are free to set it down, and this is already His, and it has been His through all four years and all fourteen meetings. That is what stands written in 1 Samuel 17:47, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one woman on one hallway floor rather than true as a general fact about God that never reaches the crate.
The belief that everything has held because you have been on it has no right to stay by this door. The word says the Lord does not save with sword and spear, and the Spirit of God has not been waiting on anybody's preparation before He acts.
One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If four years of this have taken you as far as thinking your son would have an easier time with somebody else doing this, or without you here at all, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit on your stairs and not need it explained. Do that first, tonight, before the meeting and before anything else on this page.
Declare this over yourself
Say these sitting on the floor if that is where this finds you. Nothing needs working up: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than earned, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in an exhausted body, never the preparation anybody can do before nine in the morning. And what He does about your son, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.
- Crate by the front door, you are not what has been holding my son together. 1 Samuel 17:47 says the Lord saves not with sword and spear, and He has never once been waiting on my tabs being in order.
- Voice that says nobody is on this if I am not, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word gives the battle an owner and never once named me as the owner, so you have nothing left to hold over me at this door.
- Lord, You have held my son through four years I spent believing I was the one holding him. Scripture says the battle is the Lord's, and Your Spirit has carried what I was never built to carry. I thank You, and I am opening my hands right here on this floor and saying out loud, once, who holds him.
