It Came In At The Third Line

This message is for the thing I have been avoiding arriving in the middle of the one quiet hour I have all day

He is three lines into the morning prayers and the thing he has not let himself think about all week walks in and sits down.

Half past six. The one hour. The chair by the window in the front room, and the light not properly up yet so the lamp is still doing most of the work. A shawl folded over the arm of the other chair. Downstairs, nothing yet; upstairs, nothing yet; outside, one car going somewhere at a considerate speed.

This hour is the arrangement. It has been the arrangement for a long time. Everything else in a day can be interrupted and this cannot, and he has defended it against a great many reasonable requests, and everybody in the house understands.

Line one. Line two.

Line three, and it is in the room.

Not a temptation. Not a doubt, exactly. The thing itself: the situation he has been carrying since Monday and has not let himself put down in front of anything, because putting it down in front of something would mean looking at it, and there has been a great deal to get through this week.

It does not knock. It arrives with its whole shape and it sits down in the chair with the shawl on it.

And what he feels, in the half second after, is not fear. It is something worse, which is the sense of having been got at in the one place he keeps clear.

His finger is still on the line. He has not moved.

That is you, and your third line might be the moment your head touches the pillow, or the first mile of a walk, or the second the shower comes on.

Before anything else. Nothing on this page is medical advice, and nothing here is going to tell you where a thought comes from or that a thought arriving is a spiritual condition. That is not mine to say and it would not be true. If this has been happening often, or if it has taken you somewhere darker, tell one person today who can act: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will sit in the other chair. And whatever sat down in that chair at line three, it is not a person. Nobody in that house and nobody in that week. Scripture is direct that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality.

And nothing here is a ritual. There is no sequence on this page you could get wrong, because a thing that can be got wrong is no use whatsoever to a man three lines into an hour he has been keeping for years.

Moses ends with a direction, and the direction is down

There is a sentence at the very end of Moses, in the last blessing he gives, and the word that matters in it is a word about position.

The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.Deuteronomy 33:27

Underneath.

Almost every shelter image in Scripture is above or around. A shadow is over. A wing is over. A tower is around. A shield goes in front, or, in one psalm, all the way round.

This one is under.

And under is the direction nobody watches. A man can be alert overhead. He can guard a door. He can keep an hour clear and defend it against reasonable requests for years. What he cannot do is watch the floor, because the floor is what he is standing on, and the whole point of a floor is that it does not get inspected.

Which is exactly where the thing came from at line three. Not through the door. Up through the hour itself.

And the verse says what is under there. Not nothing. Not a gap. The everlasting arms, which are already in position and were in position before line one.

You are held from underneath, in the exact direction nobody can guard. That is not a comfort at half past six: Deuteronomy 33:27 puts the arms below and states them as already there rather than as something summoned, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an underneath thing hold in a body that has just been got at in the one clear place rather than the amount of guarding anybody can do over an hour.

The clear place was never the protection

Here is what needs saying plainly, because a man in that chair will draw the wrong conclusion about himself and about the hour.

The hour is good. Keep it. But the hour was never what was protecting him. If it had been, then a morning when the thing gets in would be a morning when the protection failed, and he would have to conclude either that the hour was not kept well enough or that something is wrong with him, and both of those conclusions are false and both of them do damage.

The arms are underneath the hour too. They are underneath a good morning and a broken one and a week he did not manage to think about anything properly at all. Everlasting is a word about duration, and duration means it does not go off when the routine does.

You have not been protected by the quality of your own hour, and nothing failed at line three. The written word puts the arms underneath and calls them everlasting, and the Spirit of God is the one holding a man up through a morning that went sideways, never the standard of anybody's practice.

So there is one line here, and it is not a formula and it does not fail if it comes out as three words with a finger still on a page. Underneath are the everlasting arms. Or: He is under this hour. Said out loud, in a front room, at half past six. The words are not doing the holding. Somebody is noticing out loud what is already the case.

You have never once been asked to keep your own floor. Scripture puts the arms below and never asks anybody to look down, and the Spirit of God has been underneath every hour you have ever kept and every one you have missed.

The breakthrough

So nothing has to be cleared out of this room.

You are held right now, three lines in, with the lamp still doing most of the work. That is what stands written in Deuteronomy 33:27, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one man in one chair rather than true as a closing line in a blessing.

The thing that sat down at line three has no right to stay on the floor of this hour. The word puts everlasting arms underneath and states them as already in position, and the Spirit of God does not require anybody to guard a direction they cannot see.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If mornings like this have been arriving often, or if any of it has taken you as far as thinking the house would run more peacefully without you keeping anything, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit in the other chair and let it be quiet. Do that first, this morning, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these in the chair, hand over your heart, finger still on the line. There is nothing to work up to: this covering is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than reached for, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that has been got at in its clear place, never the quality of the hour anybody keeps. And whatever He does about the thing that sat down, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Thing that came in at the third line, you did not find a floor with nothing under it. Deuteronomy 33:27 says underneath are the everlasting arms, and they were under this chair before I opened anything.
  2. Sense of having been got at in my one clear place, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word never made my hour the thing that protects me, so nothing failed here and you have nothing to accuse the morning of.
  3. Lord, You have been under this room since long before half past six and You do not go off when a routine does. Scripture says the eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms, and Your Spirit is why that is true with my finger still on a line. I thank You, and my hand is over my heart right now and I am saying it out loud.
