The Post I Set In November

He puts his weight against it the way he does every year, and it does not give, and either side of it the winter took everything.

Bright cold. That hard winter light that has no warmth in it at all but makes everything look scrubbed. The ground is still going soft and hard in patches depending on where the sun has got to. Three or four hundred yards of fence line running away from him down toward the corner.

The two posts on the left went in the wet a couple of years ago and leaned and then leaned more and had to be redone. The pair on the right came out in the frost the winter after. There is a whole stretch beyond that which has been reset twice, and if he is honest, badly, both times.

And this one. Set on a Tuesday in November, in the dark, in weather nobody would have chosen, at the end of a day that was already too long.

He leans on it. Nothing.

He does not remember doing anything special that night. That is what he thinks about, standing here in the cold with his hand on it. He was tired, he was working by the truck lights, and he was not being careful in any way he could describe. He simply put it in the way he had been shown to, by a man who is dead now, and it went in deeper than he intended because the auger caught something and he had to take it further down.

Three winters. Everything either side of it has moved.

That is you, and your post might be a thing somebody said to you at nineteen, a decision made badly at the worst possible moment, a habit you cannot account for that has turned out to be the only structural thing in your life.

Two plain things before anything else. If somebody in your life is frightening you or hurting you, nothing here is telling you to stand out there and absorb it; tell one person today who can act. And whatever this is, it is not a person. Scripture is direct that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality, because it means you can stop losing to somebody you also love.

God attaches Himself to the performing

There is a short exchange near the beginning of Jeremiah where a young man is shown something and told what it means, and the meaning is about who is responsible for what.

Then said the LORD unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it.Jeremiah 1:12

Read who is doing the performing.

Not the prophet. Not the hearer. Not the one who has to stand up and say the thing and take whatever comes for saying it. God attaches Himself, personally, to the carrying out of what He has said, and He says so at the very start of that book, before Jeremiah has done a single thing and before any of it has cost him anything.

Which means the holding is not downstream of the man.

And that is exactly the question at a fence post. He is standing there wondering what he did right, going back over a November night in the dark by truck lights, looking for the technique, and he cannot find it, because he was tired and it was late and he did nothing special.

You are standing on something that holds because of who is behind it and not because of how well you did anything. That is not a comfort in a cold field: Jeremiah 1:12 puts the performing on God and says so before the man has done anything, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a held thing hold under somebody who cannot account for it rather than the care anybody took on a Tuesday in November.

Your read of the ground has been wrong and the ground is not the point

Here is the part that has to be said carefully, because a man like this will draw a hard conclusion.

He has been reading the fence line as a report on himself. The posts that failed are his failures. The stretch that has been reset twice, badly, is a verdict. And by extension, every part of his life that has moved is evidence about what he is, and he has been quietly totalling it up for a while now.

Nobody here is telling him that his read is a lie. He does not need to be told his feelings about that fence line are false, and if this article told him that it would be lying to him. Some of those posts did go in wrong, and he did do it, and he knows it.

What is not true is the last step. The fence line is not a scoreboard on a man, and the thing that has held for three winters is not held by his competence.

You have been reading your own ground as a verdict and it was never one. The written word puts the performing on God at the outset, and the Spirit of God has been the one holding what has held, never the standard of the work anybody did in the dark.

There is no key on this page and no method. Nothing here is a technique for making a word hold, because a technique can be done badly, and the whole point of that verse is that the holding was never on the man's side.
