Watch The Rope, Not The Water

This message is for watching how I feel the way you watch weather, and being moved by every single change in it

She is sitting in a moored boat that is moving under her, and she has spent forty minutes watching the water, and she has just been told to watch the rope instead.

Evening on the water, the good part of it, when everything goes the color of a brass instrument and the far bank stops being a place and becomes a shape. A small boat tied at a mooring ring. Two mugs. A jacket she does not need yet and will in about twenty minutes.

The boat is moving. Not badly. It is doing what a moored boat does, which is lift and settle and swing a few degrees on the tide, and if you sit in it and watch the water going past, the water is going past extremely convincingly.

She has been watching the water. That is what she does. It is what she has done since she was about eleven and it is not a bad habit, it is simply the one she has: she checks how she is, constantly, the way you check weather. Is this a good day. Is this going off. Was that dip a thing. Am I further along than last week or has it gone back.

And the woman with her, who has said almost nothing all evening, says without looking up from the mug:

"Watch the rope."

That is all she says. She does not explain it.

And the rope is on the cleat, and it has one twist in it, and it has not moved.

That is you, and your water might be a mood at four in the afternoon, a sense of distance you get on Sundays, a reading you take on yourself before you get out of bed.

Two plain things before anything else. If somebody in your life is frightening you or hurting you, nothing here is telling you to sit there and absorb it; tell one person today who can act. And whatever this is, it is not a person. Scripture is direct that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a mercy rather than a technicality, because it means you can stop losing to somebody you also love.

Hebrews puts the anchor somewhere strange

There is a sentence about an anchor that puts it in a place that would be no good at all if the writer meant an ordinary anchor.

Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil.Hebrews 6:19

An anchor of the soul. Fine. Everybody knows that one.

But read where it goes. Which entereth into that within the veil. Not down. Not into the seabed. Up and in, past the curtain, into the place where God is, which is not a direction anchors go and is exactly the point.

An ordinary anchor is only as good as what it bites into. Sand shifts. Weed slips. A good anchor in bad ground is a boat adrift by two in the morning. Which is why the writer takes the whole picture and moves the biting end of it somewhere that cannot shift, and puts it there deliberately, and calls it sure and stedfast because of where it is rather than because of anything about the boat.

You are held by something that bites into ground that does not move. That is not a nice image on an evening tide: Hebrews 6:19 takes the anchor and puts the holding end inside the veil rather than in anything a boat is floating over, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that hold under somebody who has been reading water since she was eleven rather than the steadiness anybody can achieve at a mooring.

Nobody said the water is not moving

Now the part that has to be said carefully, because this is exactly where people get hurt by well meaning teaching.

Nothing here is telling her that the water is not moving. It is moving. She is not imagining it, she is not exaggerating it, and if this article told her the movement was in her head it would be lying to her and she would be right to stop reading.

The water is genuinely going past. The boat is genuinely swinging. What she feels is a completely accurate report of the water.

The mistake is not in the observation. The mistake is in what she has been using it for.

She has been reading the water to find out whether she is held. And the water cannot tell her that. It was never wired to that question. It can tell her about the tide, which is real information, and it can tell her about the wind, and it has nothing whatsoever to say about the cleat.

You have been taking an accurate reading and asking it a question it cannot answer. The written word puts the anchor inside the veil and calls it sure because of where it holds, and the Spirit of God is the one keeping that fast, never the reading anybody takes off the surface.

And there is no key here and no method. Nothing on this page is a technique for feeling anchored, because a technique can be done badly and the failing of it would land straight back on the person doing it.

The breakthrough

So nothing has to be steadied in this boat.

You are anchored right now, moving on the tide, with a mug going cold in your hand. That is what stands written in Hebrews 6:19, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one woman at one mooring rather than true as a general image about hope.

The habit of asking the water whether you are held has no right to stay running this evening. The word puts the anchor inside the veil and never once locates the holding in the surface, and the Spirit of God does not slip when a tide turns.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If the constant reading has taken you as far as thinking a person who has to check this often is not really held at all, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit in a boat with you and say almost nothing. Do that first, this evening, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these in the boat with the water still going past. There is nothing to work up to: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than achieved, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that reads its own weather hourly, never the calm anybody can find on a tide. And whatever He does about the moving, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Water going past this boat, you are moving exactly as much as I think you are and you cannot tell me one thing about the cleat. Hebrews 6:19 says the anchor of the soul is sure and stedfast, and it bites inside the veil where no tide has ever reached.
  2. Habit of asking the surface whether I am held, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word puts the holding end somewhere the water has never been, so you have never had an answer to give me and you never will.
  3. Lord, You have kept this fast through every tide I have sat and watched. Scripture says the anchor enters past the veil, into the place where You are, and Your Spirit is why that holds under a woman in a boat at a mooring. I thank You, and I am copying one verse out by hand right now and putting it where I will see it tonight.
