Armour God GivesEphesians 6:14

The Belt Goes On First

This message is for I have been told to fight my whole life and nobody ever started at the beginning with me

The old man does not hand him the belt. He puts it in his hands and then keeps his own hands under it for a second, which is a different thing.

They are in a workshop that smells of sawdust and diesel and the cold coming off a concrete floor. Late afternoon, the light coming in low and orange through the one window that has not been painted over. There is a radio on somewhere at the back, tuned to nothing in particular, playing to nobody.

The young man is twenty three and he has been told to fight his whole life. That is not an exaggeration. He was told it at home, told it at school, told it from the front of a room by three different men in three different towns, all of them meaning something slightly different and none of them stopping to say what. He knows he is supposed to be in a battle. He has been in a permanent low grade crouch since he was about nine.

So he says, in the way young men say a thing sideways so it does not count: "Where do you even start with all this?"

The old man wipes his hands on a rag. He does not answer for long enough that the young man nearly fills the silence, which is a thing the old man knows about young men and has decided not to help him with.

Then he takes a leather belt down off the peg. Worn dark at the third hole. Not a new belt. Not a decorative one.

"You start here," he says. "Everything else hangs off this. The tools, the apron, the whole lot. If this is not on right, nothing else sits right, and you will spend your whole day pulling things up."

That is it. That is the entire lesson. The young man is faintly disappointed, because he wanted a strategy and he has been given a belt.

Twenty years later he will still be doing it in that order and he will not remember deciding to.

That is you, standing in your own workshop, twenty three or fifty three.

Because you have been told to fight your whole life too. Loudly, often, by people who meant well. And nobody ever started at the beginning with you. Nobody laid it out plain. So you have been out there in a crouch for years, hunting for a strategy, and quietly convinced that everybody else got the briefing and you missed it.

Two things before anything else. If your version of this includes somebody who frightens you or hurts you, nothing here is telling you to stand there and take it; tell one person today who can act. And this fight, whatever it turns out to be, is not against a person. Not the men who told you to fight and never said what. Not the one at home. The word is flat about it: not against flesh and blood. That is a relief and not a technicality, because it means you can stop losing to somebody you also love.

Paul starts with the belt, and he starts there on purpose

Here is where the beginning actually is. It is not dramatic. It is a belt.

Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness.Ephesians 6:14

Notice the order, because the order is the teaching. Stand therefore comes first, which means the posture is settled before a single piece is named. Then the belt. Then everything else in the list hangs off it, exactly the way it hung off a belt in the world Paul was writing to, where a man's tunic was gathered up and tied at the waist before he could do anything at all, and where the rest of the kit fastened to that band and not to the body.

And what is the belt? Truth. Not your grip on the truth. Not how well you argue it. Truth itself, the thing that is the case whether or not you feel it at four in the afternoon.

You are already fastened to something that was true before you got here. That is not encouragement from a man with a rag in his hand: Ephesians 6:14 puts truth at the waist as the first and load-bearing piece, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a fastened thing hold on a person who has been in a crouch since he was nine.

That is why nobody could give you the strategy. There was not one. There was a belt, and the reason it was never explained to you is that it is almost too plain to preach, and plain things get skipped by people who are trying to be worth listening to.

Why the beginning feels like a disappointment

Let us be honest about the letdown, because it landed in that workshop and it is landing again now.

You wanted a plan. You wanted the thing the strong people have. And what the passage gives you is a piece of gear you did not make, put on in an order somebody else set, with a verb that is not win but stand.

Count that verb, by the way. It is in that passage four times in six verses and there is no fifth. Not advance. Not overcome the man who wronged you. Stand.

You have not missed a briefing, because there was never a briefing to miss. The written word gives one order and one verb and no method at all, and the Spirit of God has been holding a man upright for years who thought he was failing an exam nobody set.

And notice what is absent. No steps. No sequence. Nothing you could do incorrectly. That absence is deliberate and it is a kindness, because the second a thing can be got wrong the whole weight of the outcome slides back onto the man doing it, and it was never his to carry.

You are standing in something that was buckled on you, right now, with the light going orange through the window. Scripture calls it the whole armor and calls it God's, and His Spirit is what makes a handed thing sit on a real body on a real afternoon.

The breakthrough

So we are not building anything here this afternoon. There is nothing to work up to.

You are girded with truth and you are covered in what He gave, and the assignment attached to it is stand. That is what is written in Ephesians 6:14, plainly and in that order, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written real on a specific man in a specific workshop rather than real in general.

The crouch has no right to stay in this building. The word never asks a believer to hunt for a strategy, and the Spirit of God is not waiting to see whether you can find one before He holds you up.

One plain thing, said the way a friend would say it and then carry on. If the years of this have taken you as far as thinking the people around you would be better off without you here, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit down with you and not rush it. That belongs in this conversation as much as anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing up, if you can. There is no working up to it: this covering is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than earned, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a working body, never the resolve you can find at the end of a shift. And what He does about the years you spent crouched, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Question I asked sideways in a workshop, you have an answer and it is not a strategy. Ephesians 6:14 says the belt goes on first and the belt is truth, and truth was true here before I walked in.
  2. Crouch I have been in since I was nine, get out in the name of Jesus. God gave one verb with that armor and the verb was stand, so there is no exam here for you to keep telling me I failed.
  3. Lord, You buckled this on me before I knew there was anything to buckle. Scripture says stand therefore, girded with truth, and Your Spirit has kept it tight through twenty years of me looking for something cleverer. I thank You, and I am opening my hands right here and naming one thing You gave me, out loud, before the light goes.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
