The Helmet You Did Not Buy

This message is for the thought that I am the only one on this road without anything on my head

He takes it. That is the whole thing. He is fourteen and there are people watching and he takes it anyway, and it costs him something to do that.

Quarter past eight on a bright morning at the bike rack outside a school. The rack is full and half the bikes are locked to each other in a way that will cause an argument at four o'clock. Two girls are already halfway across the yard. A teacher is doing the thing teachers do at gates, being cheerful at a volume nobody has asked for.

His mother is holding out a helmet.

It is not a cool helmet. It was on offer and she bought it because it was the one that was there, and it is slightly the wrong shade of a color that was never quite right in the first place. He looks at it. He looks past it at the two boys by the fence who did not bring one, who never bring one, whose parents apparently have a different set of rules that he has never been able to get his mother to adopt.

And she does not say anything clever. She has learned not to. She just keeps holding it out, at the height it needs to be at, for as long as it takes.

He takes it. He puts it on. He does the strap up with two fingers under the chin the way he has done since he was six, and he pedals off, and he is faintly humiliated and entirely protected, and those two facts do not cancel each other out, they just travel together up the road.

She stands there a second longer than she needs to, holding nothing.

That is you, and you know it is, because you have had a version of that morning.

There is a road you are on and you have been quietly certain that you are the only one on it with nothing on your head. Everybody else seems to be riding with something. A confidence. A covering. A settledness about themselves that arrived while you were not looking. And you have been going anyway, at speed, with a small permanent flinch, and you have never mentioned it.

Two plain things before anything else. If your version of this includes somebody frightening you or hurting you, nothing here is telling you to ride on and absorb it; tell one person today who can act. And whatever you are actually up against, it is not a person. Not the boys at the fence. Not the one who made this hard. Scripture is direct that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and that is a relief and not a technicality, because it means you can stop losing to somebody you also love.

Take the helmet, and notice who is holding it out

Here is the sentence, and the whole weight of it is in one small verb that people ride straight past.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.Ephesians 6:17

Take. Not buy. Not earn. Not build one that will do. Take, which is a thing you do with something already being held out at exactly the height your hand is at.

And notice what the helmet is called. The helmet of salvation. It is not the helmet of your good week. It is not the helmet of how well you have been doing with your thoughts. Salvation is the thing that was done for you and finished before you arrived at this rack, and the piece of the armor that goes on your head, over the part of you that has been arguing with itself since you were nine, is that.

You are covered over the exact part of you that you thought was uncovered. That is not a nice line from somebody who has never done the flinch: Ephesians 6:17 has the helmet handed over and taken rather than purchased, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a given thing actually sit on a real head on a real Tuesday rather than the amount of composure anybody can manage before nine in the morning.

Which means the arithmetic you have been doing every morning at your own gate has been the wrong arithmetic. You have been counting what you brought. Nobody in that passage is ever asked what they brought.

The embarrassment and the covering travel together

Now here is the thing that will land or it will not, and I would rather say it plainly than dress it up.

The boy is protected and humiliated at the same time. That is what it felt like to take it. And most of us, somewhere around fourteen, quietly decided that anything which feels like that cannot be the strong option, and we have been making decisions on that basis ever since.

But look at the actual list in Ephesians. Belt, breastplate, shoes, shield, helmet. Every one of them defensive. There is one item that is not, and it is not something anybody swings at another person; it is what is spoken, and what is spoken is the word of God, which is not yours either.

And then count the verb attached to the whole thing. Stand. Four times in six verses and there is no fifth. Not advance. Not win. Not look like somebody who does not need the helmet.

You have not been the underdressed one on this road, and the picture you have been comparing yourself to was never in the passage. The written word hands out a covering that is taken rather than achieved, and the Spirit of God has been the one keeping it on a person who has felt faintly ridiculous the whole way up the hill.

There is no method here, by the way. Nothing on this page is a sequence you could get wrong. That absence is on purpose and it is a kindness, because the moment a thing can be performed badly the entire weight of the outcome slides back onto the person performing it, and it has been sitting on your shoulders since about year nine and it does not belong there.

The breakthrough

So nothing has to be produced this morning. There is nothing to work up to at this gate.

You are covered over the head, and the covering is salvation, and it was finished before you got on the bike. That is what stands written in Ephesians 6:17, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true on one specific person at one specific rack rather than true in a general and useless way.

The idea that everybody else got something better than you has no right to stay in this yard. The word never issues a superior set to the people who look calmer, and the Spirit of God has not been waiting for you to look the part before He covers your head.

One plain thing, the way a friend says it and then carries on. If the flinch has taken you as far as thinking the people who love you would have an easier time without you here, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit down and not hurry you. Do that first and come back to the rest of this after.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, hands open. There is no working up to it: this covering is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than bought, so you are speaking back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in an ordinary body, never the confidence you can find at a school gate. And what He does about this road and how long it runs, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Road I thought I was riding uncovered, you are not the road I have been on. Ephesians 6:17 says take the helmet of salvation, and it was over my head before I was old enough to be embarrassed about it.
  2. Flinch I have carried since I was fourteen, get out in the name of Jesus. God hands the same whole armor to every person who belongs to Him, so you have never once had a list to keep me off.
  3. Lord, You held it out at exactly the height my hand was at and You waited. Scripture says the helmet is salvation and Your Spirit has kept it strapped on through every mile I spent apologizing for it. I thank You, and I am opening my hands right now and naming one thing You gave me, out loud, before I go.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
