Slowing At The Same Bend

This message is for fourteen years of easing off the gas at one bend in the road because of a decision I made there

His foot comes off the gas about eighty yards before the bend and he did not decide to do that, and he has not decided to do it for fourteen years.

Late afternoon on a road he has driven more times than he could count. Hedges high enough on both sides that you cannot see the field, then they drop away and the whole valley is there for about four seconds and then the hedges come back. The sun is behind him and everything ahead is that particular gold that makes a person feel better about their life than they have any grounds to.

The bend is nothing. It is a bend. There is a gate, a post with a reflector missing, and about six feet of gravel where a vehicle can pull in if it needs to.

He pulled in there fourteen years ago. He sat for about twenty minutes. And then he made a decision, and he drove on, and the decision was the wrong one and he has known that for about thirteen and a half of the fourteen years.

He did what could be done afterward. He said what could be said. He has lived, since, in a way that anybody who knows him would describe as good, and he does not think about it for weeks at a time.

And every time he comes down this road, his foot comes off the gas eighty yards early.

Not out of respect. Not as a ritual. He does not pray there, he does not slow to look, and if you were in the car with him you would notice nothing at all except that a man who drives quite fast drove slightly less fast for a few seconds and then sped up again.

Fourteen years of his body remembering something his life has moved on from.

That is you, and your bend might be a street you take a different route to avoid, or a month of the year that goes strange on you, or a name in a contacts list you scroll past faster than the others.

Before anything else. Nothing on this page is going to diagnose you or tell you where any of this comes from. That would be a technique, and if a reader could get it wrong it does not belong here. And if this has taken you somewhere darker, tell one person today who can act: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will come and sit down. And whatever meets you at that bend, it is not a person, and that includes you. Scripture is flat that the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and a man who has been quietly prosecuting himself for fourteen years needs that said out loud rather than assumed.

God says the strangest thing about His own memory

There is a sentence in Isaiah where God says something about Himself that is genuinely difficult to take in, and it is the only sentence a man on that road needs.

I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.Isaiah 43:25

Take the parts in order, because each one does something.

I, even I. The repetition is emphasis. It is a way of saying: this is Me doing this, personally, not delegated, not conditional on a process at your end.

Blotteth out. An old word for what you do to writing. Ink taken off a page. Not filed, not sealed, not kept in a place where nobody looks. Removed from the record.

For mine own sake. Which is the line that stops a man in his tracks, because it means the blotting out is not in response to how sorry he has been. It is not a reward for fourteen years of driving well. God gives His own reasons for it, and His reasons are about Him.

And then: will not remember thy sins. Not cannot. Will not. It is a decision, freely taken, and it is stated in the future tense, which means it goes on being taken.

You are dealing with somebody who has decided not to bring it up, and that decision is His and does not depend on you. That is not a comforting thought for a man on a country road: Isaiah 43:25 puts the blotting out on God, gives His own sake as the reason, and states the not remembering as a settled will, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a removed thing feel removed in a body that has been slowing at a bend for fourteen years rather than the amount of peace anybody can get to at seventy miles an hour.

The body remembers and that is not a verdict

Here is the thing that a man like this needs said plainly, and almost nobody says it.

Your foot coming off the gas is not guilt. It is not the Holy Spirit tapping you on the shoulder every time you drive to town. It is a body doing what bodies do, which is keep a map of where hard things happened, and it does that without asking permission and without any theological content whatsoever.

That is worth separating out, because a man who cannot tell those apart will read fourteen years of muscle memory as fourteen years of unfinished business, and conclude that it is unfinished because he has failed to get it finished.

So let us be exact about the two voices, and the difference is not about how bad you feel.

Conviction is specific. It names one thing. It hands you something you can do, usually small, usually this week. It faces forward. And it ends. When the thing is dealt with, the voice stops, and there is relief.

Accusation is total and it does not end. It does not name a thing done; it renders a verdict on the person. It offers nothing to do, or offers something already done fourteen years ago. And it can attach itself to anything, including a bend in a road, because it does not need material, it only needs a hook.

You do not have to work out where any of it comes from. That is a diagnosis, and it is not yours to make, and nothing on this site will ask you for it.

You have already done everything that was ever asked of you about that afternoon. The written word says the transgressions were blotted out for His own sake, and His Spirit convicts about a thing in order to finish it, never to keep a road under review for fourteen years.

The breakthrough

So nothing has to be reopened on this stretch.

You are cleared, right now, at the wheel, eighty yards out from a gate with a reflector missing. That is what stands written in Isaiah 43:25, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one man on one road rather than true as a doctrine that never gets past the hedges.

The review that has been running on this bend for fourteen years has no right to stay and keep its appointment. The word says He will not remember and gives His own sake as the reason, and the Spirit of God does not reopen a page He has taken the ink off.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If this has taken you as far as thinking the people affected would have been better off if you had not been on that road at all, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will lean on a tailgate with you and not need the whole story. Do that first, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these pulled in at the gravel, or say them driving, either is fine. There is nothing to work up to: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than achieved, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that has kept a map for fourteen years, never the peace anybody can manufacture at a bend. And whatever He does about the rest of it, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Bend with the reflector missing, you are not a matter that is still open. Isaiah 43:25 says He blotteth out my transgressions for His own sake, and that ink came off the page a long time before I started slowing here.
  2. Review that runs every time I come down this road, get out in the name of Jesus. God's conviction names one thing and ends when it is done, and you have never once ended, so you have no jurisdiction on this road.
  3. Lord, You decided not to remember it and You decided that for Your own reasons and not because of how sorry I have been. Scripture says I will not remember thy sins, and Your Spirit is the reason that is true at seventy miles an hour on an ordinary afternoon. I thank You, and I am writing the sentence down right now and reading Your words out loud over it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
