The List In Alphabetical Order

This message is for four in the morning and my own failures arriving in the same order they always do, so familiar I could recite them

They arrive in order. That is the part she has never told anybody. Not randomly, not according to how bad they were. In order, the same order, every time.

Four in the morning at a kitchen table she has sat at since she was thirty one. The boiler fires in the wall behind her and then goes quiet again, which is the only event that will happen between now and about half past five. A mug she made at ten to four and has not drunk. Outside, nothing yet. Not even the birds.

She did not choose to be awake. She was awake, and then she was downstairs, because lying up there with it is worse than sitting down here with it, and thirty years of practice has taught her that much.

And then the list.

The thing she said to her mother in the last year. The way she handled it when her son was fifteen. The Christmas. The letter she did not answer for eleven months. A woman at church she was cold to for reasons that seemed enormous at the time and that she now cannot reconstruct at all.

Five items and there are more, and they come in the same sequence every time, so reliably that she has sometimes caught herself waiting for the next one before it arrives, the way you wait for the next line of something you were made to learn at school.

She has confessed all of these. Some of them dozens of times. Two of them she has put right, as far as anything can be put right. One of them she has apologized for in person and been forgiven, warmly, by somebody who meant it.

They still come. In order. Four in the morning.

That is you, and your table might be a bed, or a bathroom, or a car in the shoulder, and your list might have three items or twenty.

Before anything else. Nothing on this page is going to diagnose you, and nothing here is going to tell you where that voice comes from. That would be a technique, and if a reader could get it wrong it does not belong on this site. And if the four o'clocks have taken you somewhere darker, tell one person today who can act: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will sit at that table with you. And whatever recites that list at four in the morning, it is not a person, and that includes you. Scripture says the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and nobody in that kitchen is the enemy, least of all the woman sitting in it.

John writes the sentence for four in the morning

There is a line in John's first letter that is written, as far as I can tell, for exactly one hour of the day.

For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.1 John 3:20

If our heart condemn us. He does not say it will not. He does not say a settled Christian stops having four o'clocks. He writes the condemning heart straight into the sentence as a thing that happens, and then he does something with it.

God is greater than our heart. Greater. Bigger. Over the top of. The heart is not being called a liar here, and it is not being argued with. It is being outranked.

And then the clause that does the actual work, and it is not the comfort you expect: and knoweth all things.

Read that slowly, because most of us read it as reassurance and it is stronger than reassurance. He knows all things. Which means He knows every item on that list, including the two that never make it onto it. He knows the version of the Christmas that even the woman telling it has edited. He is not being persuaded by a woman at four in the morning to think better of her than the evidence allows.

He knows the whole of it, in order, and He is greater than the heart that is reciting it.

You are held by somebody who has the complete file and is not moved by the reading of it. That is not a soothing line for a woman at a cold mug: 1 John 3:20 grants the condemning heart and then outranks it in the same sentence, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a greater thing feel greater in a body at four in the morning rather than the amount of perspective anybody can find before the birds.

Two voices, and one of them finishes

Now the practical part, and it has to be said carefully because this is exactly where people get hurt.

There are two different things that can happen in a quiet kitchen and they are not the same, and telling them apart is not about how bad you feel.

Conviction is specific. It names one thing. It hands you something you could do, and the doing is usually small and usually possible this week. It faces forward. And it ends. When the thing is dealt with, the voice is finished, and there is relief in the room. That is the whole tell.

Accusation is total and it never ends. It does not name a thing done; it renders a verdict on the person. It hands over nothing to do, or hands over something already done, which is precisely the case with three items on that list. And it comes in order, which is not what conviction is like at all. Conviction does not have a running order. A recital does.

Notice that. It is the most useful thing in this article. The Holy Spirit does not work from a set list. He deals with one thing, at a time, for the purpose of getting it dealt with. Anything that arrives as a sequence, in the same order, night after night, is not doing what conviction does, because conviction is trying to finish and a recital is trying to continue.

You do not need to work out where it comes from. That would be a diagnosis, and it is not yours to make, and nothing here will ask you for one.

You have already dealt with most of what arrives at four, and God's conviction ends when the thing ends. The written word says He is greater than the heart and knows all things, and His Spirit convicts one thing at a time and then stops, never a list that has kept its order since your son was fifteen.

The breakthrough

So nothing has to be gone through at this table tonight.

You are outranked in your own favor, right now, at four in the morning with a cold mug in front of you. That is what stands written in 1 John 3:20, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one woman at one table rather than true as a general remark about guilt.

The list that arrives in order has no right to stay and keep its appointment in this kitchen. The word says God is greater than the heart, and the Spirit of God does not work from a running order and has never once recited anything to anybody.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If the four o'clocks have taken you as far as thinking the people on that list would have had better lives without you in them, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit at that table and let it be slow. Do that first, when it is light, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these at the table with the paper in front of you. There is nothing to work up to: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than achieved, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that has been awake since half past three, never the perspective anybody can find before the birds. And whatever He does about the rest of it, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. List that arrives in the same order every night, you are a recital and you are not conviction. 1 John 3:20 says God is greater than my heart and knoweth all things, and He has the whole file and is not moved by the reading of it.
  2. Verdict on what I am, get out in the name of Jesus. God's conviction names one thing and ends when the thing is done, and you have never once ended, so you have no standing at this table.
  3. Lord, You have known every item of it, including the two I leave off, and You have never once been persuaded to think less of me. Scripture says God is greater than our heart, and Your Spirit is why that outranks a list at four in the morning. I thank You, and I am writing the first one down right now and reading Your words out loud over it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
