Too Much Since I Was Nine

This message is for hearing you are too much in my own voice now, thirty years after it stopped being anybody else's

She lowers her own hand in the middle of her own sentence, and the movement she makes is her aunt's, and she is thirty nine years old.

A meeting room with a whiteboard nobody has cleaned properly, so there is a ghost of last week's diagram under this week's. Eleven people. Somebody's water bottle sweating a ring onto a folder. That bright flat daylight through a window that makes everybody look slightly worse than they are.

She is speaking. It is going well. She has the room, and she knows it, and she can feel the thing she can always feel when it is working, which is a sort of lift under her voice.

And her hand is up, doing what her hands do, and then, without any decision at all, she brings it down and puts it flat on the table.

The exact motion. Palm turning over, hand descending, settling. It is the motion her aunt used to make at her across a kitchen table when she was nine years old, and it meant that will do now, and it was not cruel, and it worked every single time.

She finishes the point. Somebody says something appreciative. The meeting moves on.

And nobody in that room, not one person, has any idea that a woman just interrupted herself on behalf of somebody who died eleven years ago.

She has heard you are too much since she was nine. From her aunt, mostly kindly. From two teachers. From a man she was with for four years in her twenties, who said it in a way that was not kind at all.

And here is the part she would never say out loud: nobody has said it to her in over a decade. Not one person. It stopped being anybody else's voice a long time ago and it did not stop, because it changed hands.

That is you, and your motion might be a laugh you cut short, or an idea you decide not to say, or a text you soften twice before you send it.

Before anything else. Nothing on this page is going to diagnose you, and nothing here is going to tell you where a thought comes from or hand you a procedure for dealing with one. That would be a technique, and if a reader could get it wrong it does not belong on this site. And if this has taken you somewhere darker, tell one person today who can act: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will sit down with you. And whatever brings your hand down mid sentence, it is not a person, and that includes you. Not your aunt, who has been gone eleven years and was mostly kind. Scripture says the struggle is not against flesh and blood.

The accuser is named and the tense is reported

There is a sentence in Revelation that names something and then, in the same breath, says where it now stands.

For the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.Revelation 12:10

Two things are being said, and the order matters.

First, the accuser of our brethren. Scripture is willing to name that there is such a thing as accusation, and that it operated day and night, which is a phrase for relentlessness. It does not run out. It does not require new material. That is what it does.

Second, and this is the reported fact: is cast down. Past tense, done, a position lost.

Now, a boundary, and I am going to hold it firmly because this is exactly where harm gets done on sites like this one. Nothing here is going to tell you that a particular thought in a meeting room came from anywhere in particular. That is a diagnosis, and it is not mine to make and it is not yours to make, and any page that hands you a method for identifying the source of a sentence has handed you something you can perform badly, which puts the whole weight back on you. The verse is not a map. The verse is a status report about standing, and standing is what it is for.

You are being spoken about in a court where the accuser lost his position, and that was settled without any input from you. That is not a nice thought for a woman in a meeting: Revelation 12:10 puts the casting down in the completed tense and locates it entirely outside the accused, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a settled thing settle in a body that has been lowering its own hand since it was nine rather than the amount of confidence anybody can generate in front of eleven people.

Which one is it, and the test is not how bad it feels

Here is the practical part, and it needs care.

Two things can sound alike inside a person, and telling them apart is not about the volume and it is not about how ashamed you feel afterward.

Conviction is specific. It names one thing. It hands over something that can actually be done, usually small, usually this week. It faces forward. And it finishes. When the thing is done, the voice is done, and there is relief in the room.

Accusation is total and it does not end. It does not name a thing done; it renders a verdict on the person. It offers nothing to do, or offers something already done, or offers the impossible: be less. Notice that one, because be less is the shape here, and it is not an action. There is no completed state of being less. A woman can spend thirty years complying with it and never once finish, because finishing is not what it is for.

And notice the second tell, which is the one for this room. Conviction is about something you did. What she has been living under is about what she is. Nobody has ever named a sentence she said that she should not have said. The verdict has always been on the whole person.

You have never once been convicted of being yourself, and God has not spent thirty years asking you to be smaller. The written word gives conviction a specific object and a finish line, and His Spirit convicts about a thing in order to end it, never about a temperament in order to reduce a person.

The breakthrough

So nothing gets made smaller in this room.

You are cleared to keep talking, right now, mid sentence, with eleven people looking at you. That is what stands written in Revelation 12:10, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one woman at one table rather than true as a general position about accusation.

The verdict that has been running since you were nine has no right to stay in this building. The word says the accuser is cast down and puts it in the completed tense, and the Spirit of God has never once asked a person to be less of what He made.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If thirty years of this have taken you as far as thinking every room would go more smoothly without you in it, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit across a table from you and not need the whole story. Do that first, today, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with your hand flat on the table if you want, or up, either is fine. There is nothing to work up to: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than achieved, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that has been interrupting itself for thirty years, never the confidence anybody can find in a meeting. And whatever He does about the rest of it, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Motion my aunt made at a kitchen table, you are not a verdict and you never were one. Revelation 12:10 says the accuser is cast down, and that was settled without one word of input from a nine year old.
  2. Sentence that says be less, get out in the name of Jesus. God's conviction names a thing and it can be finished, and being less has no finish line at all, so you have never once been His.
  3. Lord, You have never asked me to take up less room than You gave me. Scripture says the accuser of our brethren is cast down, and Your Spirit is why that is true in a meeting room on a Tuesday morning. I thank You, and I am writing it down right now and reading Your words out loud over the top of it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
