The Same Three Months Again

This message is for apologizing to my mother at her grave again for three months years ago that she never once brought up

He is crouched at the stone with a cloth, and the stone is already clean, and he has been wiping it for about six minutes.

Late afternoon at the cemetery on the hill, the one where you can see the whole town if you stand up, which he has not done. The grass has been cut recently and there is that smell. Two rows over, an older couple are putting something in a metal vase and having a small quiet disagreement about how it should go.

He brings the cloth every time. It lives in the car. There is never anything on the stone except the ordinary dust of a place with a road below it, and he wipes it anyway, in the same order: the name first, then the dates, then the line at the bottom that his sister chose and that he has never quite liked.

And then, still crouched, he starts.

He apologizes for three months. Three specific months, four years before she died, when he did not come. There were reasons. The reasons were real and would sound reasonable to anybody he explained them to, and he has explained them to nobody, and he has never once found them adequate.

He apologized to her while she was alive. Twice. And here is the thing that should end this and does not: she did not know what he was talking about. Both times. Genuinely, warmly, a little puzzled. She had not been counting. It had not occurred to her to count. She had a whole life going on in those three months that had nothing to do with an absence he had been carrying like a bag of rocks.

She never once brought it up.

He wipes the dates again. The couple two rows over have resolved their disagreement.

That is you, and your stone might be a photograph, or an anniversary you go quiet on, or a name you cannot say in an ordinary voice.

Before anything else. Nothing on this page is going to diagnose you, and nothing here is going to tell you where any of this comes from or hand you a procedure to run. That would be a technique, and if a reader could get it wrong it does not belong on this site. And if this has taken you somewhere darker, tell one person today who can act: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will come and stand with you. And whatever brings you back to that stone, it is not a person, and that includes you. Not your mother, who was not counting, and not the man with the cloth. Scripture says the struggle is not against flesh and blood.

Micah picks a place with no shallows

There is a sentence at the end of Micah that chooses its geography with some care, and the choice is the point.

He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.Micah 7:19

The depths of the sea.

Not the shore. Not the shallows where a thing can be seen through a foot of water on a clear day. Not a river, where a thing goes downstream and could conceivably be found again by somebody walking the bank.

The depths. The part nobody goes to. The part where a thing is not merely out of reach, it is out of the category of things that get retrieved.

And note the verb before it, because most people skip it: he will subdue our iniquities. Subdue is a word for putting something down that was putting you down. It is not filing. It is not pardoning on paper while the thing carries on operating. It means the thing has been overpowered, and then, having been overpowered, it has been thrown into the one place with no retrieval.

You are separated from those three months by depth, and the throwing was done by somebody with better arms than yours. That is not a soothing line for a man at a graveside: Micah 7:19 puts both verbs on God and chooses the one place that has no shallows, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a sunk thing feel sunk in a body that has been crouching at a stone for four years rather than the amount of resolution anybody can reach on a hill.

When a thing has already been answered

Now the practical part, and it needs care.

Two things can go on inside a person and they sound alike, and the difference is not how much it hurts.

Conviction is specific. It names one thing. It hands over something that can be done, usually small, usually this week. It faces forward. And it finishes: when the thing is dealt with, the voice stops, and there is relief.

Accusation is total and it does not end. It does not name a thing done; it renders a verdict on the person. It hands over nothing to do, or it hands over something already done.

Look at that last clause, because that is precisely what is happening on this hill.

He apologized. Twice. To the actual person. And the actual person, who is the only one with any standing to hold it against him, did not hold it, was not holding it, had never picked it up. The matter was answered while she was alive, in her own kitchen, warmly, and it did not take.

That is the diagnostic. Not how bad it feels. Whether the voice accepts an answer.

Conviction accepts answers. It is trying to reach a resolution, so when the resolution arrives, it stops. A voice that has been given the answer twice, by the one person entitled to give it, and has kept speaking for four years, is not trying to reach a resolution. It is doing something else, and whatever that something else is, it is not the work of God in a man.

You have already answered this in the only place it could be answered, and the answer stood. The written word puts the sins in the depths and the subduing on God, and His Spirit convicts in order to finish something, never to keep a man at a stone with a cloth in his hand.

The breakthrough

So nothing gets settled on this hill, because nothing here is outstanding.

You are clear, right now, crouched at a stone with a cloth in your hand. That is what stands written in Micah 7:19, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one man on one hill rather than true as a general promise about the sea.

The apology that has been going for four years has no right to stay and keep asking. The word puts the thing in the depths and subdues it, and the Spirit of God does not go on requesting something He accepted in a kitchen a long time ago.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If this has taken you as far as thinking she would have had a better last few years without you in them, or that anybody would, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will walk down off this hill with you and not need the whole story. Do that first, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing up, with the town below you. There is nothing to work up to: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than achieved, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that has been crouching at a stone for four years, never the peace anybody can reach with a cloth. And whatever He does about the rest of it, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Three months I keep bringing back to this stone, you are answered and you have been answered twice. Micah 7:19 says the sins go into the depths of the sea, and the depths were chosen so nobody could go down and look.
  2. Voice that will not take an answer, get out in the name of Jesus. God's conviction is trying to finish a thing, and you were given the finish four years ago by the only person entitled to give it, so you were never His.
  3. Lord, You subdued this Yourself and You threw it where it does not come back. Scripture says Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea, and Your Spirit is why that is true on a hill above a town on an ordinary afternoon. I thank You, and I am writing the sentence down right now and reading Your words out loud over it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
