The Thought That Arrives When I Stand

This message is for the same thought that shows up the moment I stand up in a room full of people, every time, on cue

The room stands and she stands with it, and the sentence gets to her before her hands are halfway up.

Third row, left side, near the aisle. A morning with proper light in it, coming through the high windows and lying in bars across the shoulders of the people in front. Somebody's toddler has got loose and is heading for the front with great purpose and nobody has decided to stop him yet. The first line goes up, and it is a good one, and four hundred people mean it.

She stands. That is all she does. She stands the way everybody stands, and there is that half second where her weight comes onto her feet and her hands start to lift.

And there it is. On cue. The same words, in the same order, in the same tone, that have arrived at this exact moment for something like nine years.

She does not flinch. She has had nine years of practice at not flinching. She sings. She sounds completely fine, because she is completely fine, in the way that a person can be entirely functional and simultaneously be having something said to them.

Her hands go up to about here and stop. Not down. Just to about here.

If you asked her afterward what the sentence was, she would tell you, because she is honest, and she would tell you in a voice that made it sound like a small thing, and it is not a small thing. It has been arriving on cue for nine years. It arrives when she is happy, which is the part she finds hardest to explain. It waits for the lift and then it comes.

That is you, and your cue might be the moment you walk into your parents' house, or the second before you speak in a meeting, or the point in a good evening where you notice you are enjoying it.

Before anything else. Nothing on this page is going to diagnose you, and nothing here is going to tell you where that sentence comes from or hand you a procedure for it. That would be a technique, and if a reader could get it wrong it does not belong on this site. And if this has taken you somewhere darker, tell one person today who can act: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one friend who will come and sit with you. And whatever arrives on cue in the third row, it is not a person, and that includes you. Scripture says the struggle is not against flesh and blood, and nobody in that room is the enemy, least of all the woman standing in it.

The verse after the famous one says what He came to do

Everybody can quote the verse before this one. Almost nobody has been handed this one, and it is the one that does the work in a third row.

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.John 3:17

Sent not his Son to condemn.

Read that as a statement of purpose, because that is what it is. It is not saying God is gentle about condemning. It is saying that condemning was not the errand. It was not on the list of reasons for the sending. The whole mission is stated positively in the second half, and the first half exists precisely to close off the reading that everybody's instinct reaches for.

Which means that when a sentence arrives at the exact moment a person stands up to sing, and that sentence is about what she is, it is not the errand. It cannot be. The errand was stated, and it was stated in the negative first because somebody knew we would need it that way round.

You are not being condemned in that room, and it was never what He came to do. That is not encouragement in a third row: John 3:17 states the purpose of the sending and rules out condemning by name, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a stated purpose actually land on a woman whose hands stop halfway rather than the amount of composure anybody can hold on a bright Sunday morning.

The tell is the timing

Now the practical part, and it needs saying carefully.

Two things can happen inside a person and they sound similar and they are not the same, and the difference is not how bad it feels.

Conviction is specific. It names one thing. It hands over something that can actually be done, usually small, usually this week. It faces forward. And it ends. That is the whole tell: when the thing is dealt with, the voice is finished.

Accusation is total and it does not end. It does not name a thing done; it renders a verdict on the person. It hands over nothing to do, or hands over something already done.

And there is a second tell, and it is the one for this article, and it does not go back into hiding once it has been seen.

Look at the timing. Conviction does not wait for the lift. It has no interest in whether the moment is a happy one. It arrives when it arrives, usually inconveniently, usually about something specific, and it is entirely uninterested in ruining a good morning, because ruining is not what it is for.

What has been happening in that third row for nine years is precisely timed. It waits. It comes on the upbeat, at the exact second a woman's weight settles and her hands begin to rise. That is not a coincidence and it is not a character flaw and it is not something she is doing to herself. It is a shape. And it is not the shape of anything God does.

You have never once been convicted at the moment you got happy. The written word says condemning was not the errand, and His Spirit convicts about a thing in order to finish it, never about a person at the exact instant they lift their hands.

The breakthrough

So nothing gets assessed in this room this morning.

You are not on trial here, right now, in the third row, with your weight on your feet. That is what stands written in John 3:17, and it is His Spirit who makes what is written true for one woman in one row rather than true as a general statement about the world.

The sentence that has been arriving on cue for nine years has no right to stay in its slot. The word states the errand and puts condemning outside it, and the Spirit of God does not time anything to the second a person gets happy.

One plain thing, said the way a friend says it and then carries on. If nine years of this have taken you as far as thinking that room would be lighter without you standing in it, tell one human being today. Your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit with you afterward and not need the whole story. Do that first, this morning, before anything else on this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing, if standing is where this finds you. There is nothing to work up to: this standing is yours in Christ and it was given to you rather than achieved, so you are saying back what He has already settled. Scripture is under every word and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a body that has been braced on the upbeat for nine years, never the composure anybody can hold in a full room. And whatever He does about the rest of it, and when, is His to decide and never was on your list.

  1. Sentence that arrives when I stand, you are not on the list of reasons He came. John 3:17 says God sent not His Son to condemn, and that was stated as a purpose and not as a mood.
  2. Cue you have been keeping for nine years, get out in the name of Jesus. God's conviction has never once waited for the lift or timed itself to the second I got happy, so you were never His and you have no slot here.
  3. Lord, You have never met me at the top of a good moment with a verdict. Scripture says He came that the world through Him might be saved, and Your Spirit is why that is true in a third row on an ordinary Sunday. I thank You, and I am writing it down right now and reading Your words out loud over it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
